College of the Canyons Fall 2016

Anyone applying to COC Nursing program Fall 2016?

There's so much to get done!!! Just to make sure I got this correct...the TB shot is given and then 1 week later you get jt read...that same day you get a second TB shot and it is read three days later? When I ask for this at the clinic (I have facey) should I just tell them that this is the process I need for the TB not the usual one? :)

I know! I'm so excited to start! For the TB just go to facey and say you need two TB tests done as part of your nursing school physical. Some places will read it after 48 hours and some in 7 days (which is what COC's student clinic does). As long as you get two TB tests you will be fine :)

As long as your titers show immunity to Hep B then yes you are good :)

Awesome! Thank you so much! :D

Hey guys

So if we got a TB test less than 12 months, we just do another regular TB test? Or do with still get the two step TB test? Thanks in advance I know they probably said it during orientation but there was so much info that I didn't get it all.

I think yes just the regular one? Because the paper says that if you get TB each year than you dont need the two step TB...I would call or email them :) Same here I was trying to write everything down but you know how it is lol :D

Yes, I asked Julie at orientation. You get a 2 step TB upon entry and then one every year after. They said they send you reminders when the next batch of deadlines are due.

So my future peers....have you guys looked into the Adn-Bsn options?? What are your thoughts? Your plans? Are there other options or schools that you have looked into?

:x3:

First, I need a seat in the program. I am still on the alternate list. I want to pursue a BSN. I would like to get my ASN and pursue a BSN while I am working because I don't want to take out loans if at all possible. I have loans from my previous degree and I don't want to add to the balance if I can help it. They gave some good options at orientation but there are a lot of other possibilities too. What are your plans?

Personally I am most interested in concurrent enrollment programs because I want to go onto grad school for NP so I want my bachelors over with as soon as possible. Plus getting an RN job in a hospital is becoming almost impossible without having a BSN or being enrolled in one when you apply.

I mentioned this before but CSU Dominguez Hills offers an ADN-BSN concurrent enrollment program but the huge downside is for the first two semesters you pay 1500 out of pocket. I was enrolled but I ended up getting a new apartment and needed 1500 to put down so no mas CSUDH program.

Currently I have been looking into CSULA who has a concurrent enrollment program which would start next summer for our nursing class. I am still interested in the CSUDH program because you can enroll anytime (every March) which would be an option if I don't get into the CSULA program.

I also have looked into CSUN who has an RN-BSN program which you can attend full time or part time but admission is only once a year and you must have your license before you can start any classes. CSUN is a great school though so it is still on my radar.

I also have looked into many San Diego area programs if you are interested at all but since they are out of the area I will refrain from mentioning them unless anyone wants more info. :)

I am really appreaciating your responses :) I can't do the CSUDH this summer, however maybe next year? I was looking into online RN-BSN programs (the ad about CSU San Marcos sounds appealing) CSU Channel Islands is another choice I am looking into...The thing is I dont know if I want to do a concurrent or an Rn-bsn program......

@journey what would you suggest?

Oh I looked into CSU San Marcos too and that program sounds awesome! :) I've also heard good things about the school in general but from what I could tell from the website there was only a part time option which means it would take I believe 6 semesters to finish everything. The CSU Channel Islands program takes 14 months but again another excellent school.

As for what I suggest it really depends on you. I've heard being in concurrent programs are really draining because when you aren't at COC you will be at the CSU when everyone else in our class is relaxing or only taking an elective course. Personally I'm worried there is a chance I might burnout and what if god forbid I fail a semester at COC? But at the same time I've always been someone who has done full time school and work so I am use to having to plan all the time and be on top of everything.

In short, there are a ton of pros and cons to weigh and I'm still in the process of doing it myself. I would love to hear any research you have found or things you (or anyone) is weighing as well. We are all in it together and hearing perspectives from multiple people is always good :)
