Cochran School of Nursing (Yonkers) 2011

Anyone here applying or in the program right now? Looking to apply for the fall. Also, I have already taken the TEAS, and requirements say they schedule you for the test after you submit an application. Can I just use my previous scores or are they going to make me retake that test?

Wishing to obtain any and all feedback, especially about the curriculum and job prospects as an ADN in a growing BSN world. Thanks!

Hi. I plan on applying to Cochran as well as Dorothea Hopfer this year. I'm not completely positive but I faintly recall Cochran's website saying that they will accept the test as long as it was taken within the year--I think I read something like that. Better safe than sorry though, I would take a look at their site to confirm or even give them a call.

Best of luck!

Thanks for your response! I read their website all over and could not see anything about this either way (TEAS within a year) but perhaps I missed it. I did email the school but they have not responded yet (I keep forgetting to call them). I was going to apply to Hopfer as well but turns out they are not NLNAC accredited. Same thing with Westchester CC. I need to attend an accredited school since I will be furthering my education later and these programs require graduation from NLNAC or CCNE accredited schools.

Oh wow, thanks for the info. I didn't know that Hopfer and WCC was accredited.

I'm not sure why I'm so sure of what I told you then--maybe I just assumed which is never a good thing. If you find out from them though, please share. It's a good thing to know for the future.

Hopfer and WCC are NOT accredited through NLNAC. I looked them up on the website and they are not there. Cochran however IS accredited, search here:

http://www.nlnac.org/forms/directory_search.htm

Now, keep in mind that not all programs are accredited by NLNAC (ADN programs are accredited through NLNAC, though some BSN programs are also accredited through them too). If a BSN is not accredited through NLNAC, they may very well just be accredited through CCNE, which also lists accredited grad programs (I don't believe CCNE accredits ADN programs). Search those here:

This info is actually crucial to keep in mind if you're looking to pursue nursing degrees beyond the associates. Have seen many programs that require ADN graduates to come from accredited schools. At a bare minimum, a nursing school that is approved by the state's Board of Nursing is sufficient to allow you to sit for the NCLEX. So, schools like WCC and Hopfer are fine if a nursing student does not intend to further their education beyond an associates.

I will let you know what I hear about the TEAS thing, still no reponse from them to my email, and yet again I forgot to call them today, they close @ 430pm.

I'm such a moron, lol, I meant to say I didn't know those two weren't accredited :/

But, yes this is excellent information to know. I would have been very upset to find out later on that something like this would have stopped me from continuing school beyond an associates. I should have taken the time out to research that, so I appreciate the links :)

Well, not everyone knows to look for these things. This is why allnurses.com is awesome - we can share information and learn so much from others. Now, I am pretty sure there are nurses on here or out there that have attended WCC and Hopfer and have gone on to do their BSN, MSN or beyond at some schools, but I rather be safe in knowing that the school I attend is accredited in addition to Board of Nursing approved. My heart is set on eventually earning my MSN or DNP @ Columbia, and I am hard pressed to believe that they would accept transcripts from an unaccredited school.

Oh, and I knew you had probably made a typo, but just wanted to make sure :D

Hi Paco69,

Am back on the thread today, and thanks for the consolation the other day, my BP is back to normal now, thanks to the magic beta blocker. lol!!!

Yeah, what does it matter if a school is NLNAC accredited, and not CCNE accredited. Quinnipiac is NLNAC accredited, but not with CCNE. So am a bit confused here, blc I have admission letter from them already, and I really would not like to waste my time going to a non- accredited school, yet very expensive. As my ultimate goal is to be a Nurse anesthetist, so I really have to plan well ahead for that regarding this accreditation thing.

I was confused for a minute and then realized that we interacted on the Stony Brook thread, lol :D Glad to be of help!!

Does not matter whether school is NLNAC or CCNE accredited, some schools are even both. But as I noted earlier, NLNAC accredits BSNs but is more common with ADN programs while CCNE is pretty much exclusively BSN, MSN and doctoral nursing programs. Some schools are actually accredited by both, but I don't believe this makes them any better than schools that have one accreditation. As I understand it, schools pay to have their schools reviewed for accreditation. So in theory, a school lacking accreditation does not mean that the school and its academics are inferior, they just for some reason did not find reason to spend the money. But because reputable BSN and graduate programs are requiring graduation from accredited ADN programs, I think it is important to make sure one's program is one. To sit for the NCLEX licensing exam however, the bare minimum is the state's Board of Nursing approval (which is implicit with NLNAC or CCNE schools anyway).

Hey paco69,

Thanks for that piece of information.

Someone at Cochran got back to me and confirmed that YES, they will accept TEAS results previously taken within the last year.

I can't believe we must be the only ones out there applying to this school ... really? Where are all the Cochran people? :D
