COC - College of the Canyons - Spring 2014

Published

I'm starting this thread for everyone applying for COC's spring 2014 RN program. Please feel free to join in. We're all in this together! For anyone who's thinking of applying, the deadline for turning in your transcripts and requesting your prerequisite evaluation is tomorrow!

I'm an LVN hoping to get into the LVN to RN program. I applied last year and received an email notifying me that I qualified for the program but that they didn't have the required 20 qualified LVN applicants to offer the class. Booo hooo hooo... Oh well, I completed all of the General Ed classes in the meantime and have my fingers crossed for this time around :-)

I'm a little nervous about the TEAS V test and am starting to study for it. I read that the test is pretty challenging. Yikes!

I look forward to hearing from my fellow nail-biters!

Thanks for the advice :-) Skills lab here I come!

Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for the email :-)

Is anybody here doing the COC CSUN program? If so have you heard anything back from the nursing department... I for sure want to do it!

erick2768: Yes, I have already had ------------------ email me directly about this. She has already gone over the "interest" forms that we filled out. She had a question for me about statistics. I guess this course is required BEFORE you can take your nursing research class at CSUN, however it is not required to enter into the program - kind of like psych 101 for ADN program being a pre-req for taking psychiatric nursing. So I'll be taking stats this winter - yuck! I still need chem too, but I'm glad it's not required for entry...its just required for the degree.

Question for anyone else that may be reading this thread: I know we should be taking this time to just kind of relax...since life will be pretty much put on hold starting February...but I've been thinking about getting a book on dosage calculations to read this winter - I think I saw a very cheap "For Dummies" book on amazon with excellent reviews. Do you think this is a good idea? From what I understand, we will need to take a dosage test every semester, and its pretty much pass or fail - and if you fail, your out of the program. I'm just not sure if there is going to be a class that focuses purely on calculations and this subject makes be a bit nervous.

Tiktokk,

I think that's a really good idea. Even though we should "relax" before the semester, I hate the feeling of not doing anything that's going to help me for the nursing program. Especially if potentially failing that test could kick us out of the program. I'll be sure to look at that book :)

Thanks for telling us!

I was watching a YouTube video about nursing school the other day and they recommended buying a book that helps you study for the NCLEX during the entire nursing program. I'm not positive what the book is called but I'll double check and let you know :)

The book is called "Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN Examination, 5th Edition". It got really good reviews on amazon!

Has anyone else seen this or heard of any other books that could help?

I haven't heard anything from her! Maybe it was just to inform you about stats? I have all my classes done :). Just need to complete the nursing program and then hopefully just one at CSUN. I think everyone that ask to be in the cohort and "qualifies" will be allowed to do it.

Oh, and as for that dosage test you have 3 chances to take it. If you don't get 100 percent in one of those 3 chances they kick you out. We will have classes that will teach us this and with a bit of studying we should all do fine :).

I haven't taken statistics yet, I'm gonna take it over winter but i haven't received any email yet from----------------. Should i just applied at CSUN or how does it work?

If the stats class you get into is anything like mine, be ready for some serious work! The midterm was worth 25% of our grade and the class average was 48%. An F is 50% so the class average was an F-. I have an A in the class only because I spend many hours each and every day studying. It's right up there with anatomy/physiology and microbiology or quite possibly worse. Hopefully, your class will be easier :-)

When I went through the LPN/LVN program, one of my fellow students was given a book on calculations by one of her coworkers. I looked it over and loved it! It focuses on the "cancellation method" which is the way we were being taught to do the calculations. It's very straightforward and, in my opinion, very easy to understand. It's a 1983 edition. I looked at a more current edition and didn't like it as much as this edition. It's a small book that I purchased used for $3.50 plus shipping. The title is "Medical Dosage Calculations" and the ISBN is 0-8053-7572-4.

It's my understanding that only a select few will be offered the opportunity to take part in the CSUN program. Please correct me if I'm wrong :-)

From what I recall at orientation, if you want to be considered for the CSUN program, you have to apply to CSUN by 11/30/2013.

jessil427 - thanks for that book recommendation. I just checked it out and it has glowing reviews! I added it to my Christmas wish list! :)

erick2768 - thanks for the heads up on the "3 chance" bit. I didn't know this, and that definitely puts my mind at ease.

2dawn - ugh! I kinda had a feeling stats was gonna be a nasty little class...can I ask what instructor you took? All three instructors that are teaching the class this winter have horrible ratings on ratemyprofessor.com.

2dawn is correct. I just talked with my counselor today and she said only half of the cohort will be offered the CSUN program, however she wasn't able to explain to me how that "half" were chosen. She said that several will either decline the offer or drop out because they realize they've bitten off more than they can chew. Those that decline or drop will allow more spaces to open up. What kind of sucks about this whole thing is that you have to pay the CSUN application fee ($55) without even knowing if your going to be selected. But I personally emailed ---------------- and stressed to her that I was extremely interested, lol....not sure what good that'll do!

2dawn and tiktok. You are right, but what I mean is basically what tiktokks counselor said. Half the cohort is already like 40 people so that's a lot of spots, but you have to remember not everyone is interested....

I called and asked today. "You will be notified with plenty of time to apply to CSUN". ---------------- is the one that selects us and apparently she is still working on them.

FYI, the uniform website is finally fixed and ready to go!

My counselor kept telling me only 30 out of the total of 60 would be given offers...which I thought was strange 'cause I could have sworn the cohort was only 50 along with 30 alternates for a total of 80. I could be wrong though :wacky:

And erick...your exactly right...not everyone will be interested, which definitely works in our favor ;) . Also, that's good news about the uniform website. When I first logged on several weeks ago, I was like, "umm, am I missing something here? there's no sizes to choose from!"
