CNA's...complaining constantly...

Published

I'm an LPN at a LTC facility and I have a CNA who is a habitual complainer and whiner. She's such a ***** all of the time. She does some parts of her job rather well. Sometimes she is on the phone 4-5 times during my shift. Today I called her on her phone habits and asked her if she was on break. She gave me attitude.

Then she begins complaining...

Where's....? Where's....? She likes keeping tabs on one of the other CNA's on the floor whom she does not like. Yet, I see her talking on the phone and sitting down all of the time.

The problem...

The other nurses don't do crap about it. They call her to the phone when her personal calls come in, etc... This problem is a long time in the making and won't be fixed overnight. I'm going to have to find things to keep her busy so that she won't be running her mouth all day long. She's my little instigator and troublemaker!

I feel as if I'm raising a child. She knows her job better than I do! She's been doing it for a very long time. As if us nurses don't have enough to deal with already...

I guess that I'm going to have to outline EVERYTHING I want her to do all day every day and find busy work for her...or bring some duct tape! Muahahahahahaha!

Any advice or suggestions?

Thanks guys!

I take offence with your comment about being rid of whiney, lazy, manipulative, insubordinate cna's who refer themselves as nurses to patients. Just as there are bad cna's, there are bad nurses as well. At the LTC facility I work for LPN's have been fired for sleeping on the job and being lazy. Being a CNA is a dirty, messy, back breaking, thankless job. I try to put 100% in what I do. But I am burning out. This CNA , by next April, will be a LPN and probably future RN.

I'm well aware things go both ways, but no one ANYWHERE on ANY PART of this thread reffered to ALL CNAs as ANY of that, they are reffering to their OWN places of employment and their OWN experiences at that job. SHEESH!! :p

I do not know why you should be offended. I was not talking about you.

If you worked with these whiney, insubordinate, etc. CNAs who refer th themselves as nurses, I think you would be very offended by them.

Signed- former CNA, former LPN and current RN.

I am not offended when I read statements about specific "lazy" or whatever nurses, because I know the posts do not refer to me or nurses in general. If I had generalized that ALL CNAs were like this, I could see why you would be offended. But I was refering to a specific few.

The job is back-breaking for those who actually DO the job, but these CNAs don't do their work. It is cake for them, and very hard for the rest of us who pick up their slack.

Thank you, LPN2Be2004. Well stated.

OK. You made your point.

I had that problem once at an ER I once managed...I took the top three miscreants with the most time coupled with the crapiest 'tudes and fired them. Surprised the living "doody" out of the remainig delinquents who chose to leave or attempt to transfer to another Dep't. In the end, I took to heart what the RN's wanted...that they would rather do it all than to have to have a shift's worth of resentments because the CNA's did nothing. Added $256,000 to my budget which went towards raises for all full time RN. We had no more CNA's during my regime...good riddance!

I am sitting here nearly in tears with anger at some of these posts. As a hard working, ass-busting CNA/Tech, I am extremely offended by the blantent disrespect noted in some of these posts. Sure, I've worked with some lazy CNA's, but I also could say that about some of the RN's I have worked with. Try this on for size. I being an only CNA on a recent night shift on a cardiac floor was the ONLY person really working 3/4 of the time. I did 18 vital signs q4h, I did 18 strict I&O's 2x a shift, I did 18 daily weights, I did all the bed pans and potty calls, not to mentions the pop and snack runs, I did 2 CABG preps, as well as

ALL the AM labs and EKG's.. all the time the nurses sat in a little circle at the nurses station planning the charge Nurse's Wedding and talking about their sex lives. Think about that before you say you are glad to be rid of us 'whiney, lazy, manipulative, insubordinate CNAs'!!

As a hard-working a$$-busting RN, I'm sick to death of the *particular, specific* whiney, insubordiate, lazy CNAs who are employed where I work. I like it better when they call in sick, because then I do not have to deal w/ them.

If you are a hard-working CNA, then you do not work with me! My post is NOT about YOU! Get over it. Sheesh!

If I said that I know someone who got a short hair-cut and it looked bad, would you post all upset because you happen to have short hair?

No, because I have never seen your hair cut, know nothing about it and have never made a comment on it!

Same applies here. Clue phone, it's for you!

That reminds me.

That right there is the reason (and i say this being a CNA for almost 11 years) why i think "nursing" should not be used in a job title unliess you are a licensed nurse. Patient Care Assistant is what a lot of places use, but the term PCA can be confused with Patient Controlled Analgesic lol. Certified Care Assistant, i think is a good idea. When people see a name badge that says "nursing" they sometimes just see "nurs" and assume you are one.

Too many ex co-workers have referred to themselves as nurses, and i HAVE said "it's bad enough the majority of people here are confused, but don't make it worse by lying".

Even now, i still get that, even though my name badge says "C.A./Phlebotomist" (in the world's tiniest print, yet that gawd-awful mug shot picture is nice and big).

But I have ALWAYS corrected the pt. or the family member (for example: asking for pain meds) who referred to me as "nurse", by saying "i'm the assistant for the nurse. Your nurse is _______. But i will tell her/him you want something for pain. If you need anything, just ring". It's the right thing to do instead of letting them believe you are the nurse.

LPN2Be2004,

I like the way you think! The CNAs' badges say "PCT" in large print where I work, but the vast majority of pts do now know what that is. They think everyone in scrubs is a nurse.

I have overheard CNAs giving pts medical advice to pts and even advising them on their meds. The CNAs are pets of the NM and show a very different side of themselves when she is around. CNAs have even been known to change IV pump settings where I work. I feel it is way too dangerous (as well as very frustrating and demoralizing) for me to work w/ these people.

There is one really great tech where I work, but unfortunately, we don't get to work together all of the time. I've bought him several gifts in appreciation of his work. He is planning to start nursing school soon. I've given him some supplies for school, too.

I want to work with people who know their jobs, their scope of practice and take pride in doing a great job. I'm sick of the lazy, mean-sprited wannabes

The OP was speaking about bad apple CNAs, that's what this discussion is about. I doubt that anyone here is grouping ALL CNAs into the 'whiney, lazy, manipulative, insubordinate' category. There are whiney, lazy, manipulative, insubordinates in every aspect of every profession. It's just that this thread is pertaining to those that are CNAs. Please don't take offense.

There ARE people who THOUGHT of that when they posted, hence the reason why no one has said "EVERY SINGLE CNA IN THE WORLD". People were ONLY discussing the ones they have worked with, NOT ALL OF THEM. If you took the time to read every single word of every single post, you would have gathered that.

(If you're in near tears from anger from what you interpretted from the posts, then you might want to step away from the computer for awhile, seriously. You're way too involved when a message board affects you THAT bad.)

That posting thread screamed generalization all over it. I know CNA's can be like that.. I've worked with and still do work with some like that. But the person who claims that they'd rather work on a floor staffed with all RN's to get rid of all the 'whiney, lazy, manipulative, insubordinate CNAs' was a total generalization!! I'm sorry, but I take pride in MY work as well as respect the RNs and doctors' work. I am not either yet, and I don't act like it You may not have said all, but you said most. I have been on this board for 6 months now and have read through a lot of ranting and raving about RN's, MD's, CNA's, Floor vs ER, visa versa and etc, and have never taken offense as I know it is all in good fun and just ranting about specific persons, but some in this thread went too far in their generalized CNA bashing. While I realize that they OP was discussing one specific CNA, some of the responses took a more generalized form, and is why I got upset.. not because of the OP.

Of course no one is saying ALL CNA's are bad..nor are all LPN's..or RN's...they are just posting their experiences. I'd just like to say I'm sooooo grateful to finally have a CNA on our night shift who is wonderful ,sweet, and KIND to the patients....what a difference she makes to everyone...I really appreciate her and I let her know it often...we went from having a mean-spirited, lazy CNA..to no CNA at all..and finally now having this great person working with us..no specific point here..just happy to be working with a real professional now :)
