Cna training in Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Published

Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone is familiar with any CNA training courses in Baton Rouge (besides OLOL) or surrounding area. I would like to work as a CNA before returning back to school as an accelerated student. I really would like somewhere free but I'll take what I can lol. If you know of anywhere please let me know. I'm looking to be certified within the next couple of weeks or months. Thanks!!!

Iam taking CNA, ekg, phelbotomy at Louisana tech. I will finish my clinical on Dec. 5th

Oh there is a school in Metarie I believe I think it was 4 or 5 weeks. It's listed in the local newspaper under school/ training I found a few it that are for around 600.00

Try the nursing homes they sometime offer the program there was one here in LaPlace that had training I think you had to just buy the books. I can't think of the name it is located across the street from st. Joan of arc school

Ok. Thanks. I will look into them. Can you tell me about the training at La Tech. (How long is the program, cost, etc.)

Specializes in PACU, LTC, Med-Surg, Telemetry, Psych.

I took mine at Mercy Institute in New Orleans East.

If you want to travel a bit though, Nunez Community College in Chalmette, LA CNA program counts as one class off of LPN - at least from a source I knew a few years back.

Have you checked into LTC? I hear they offer a similar deal. I decided to go with Mercy, though because it was quicker (2 months/ 1 class instead of 1 semester/ 2 classes) and LTC would not take my old ACT scores. They wanted me to pay 50 something bucks for a COMPASS test.

Yeah, I do not blame you on OLOL. They seemed kind of steep.

The school in Metarie/ Kenner is steep, too (if this is the one I am thinking about). I think 1K to 1.5K is pretty darn steep for a CNA class. Newsflash, too: In LA you do not need EKG/Phlebotomy. Most places in Louisiana are not going to let a CNA do that outside of the VA system or some of the really, really big teaching hospitals.

I think BRCC offers a class as well.

Thanks for all the information. I will look into all them and hopefully I'll find something!! Would anyone recommend a nursing home for training? I'm only asking because I've heard that they will leave a sour taste in your mouth lol.

Avoid any facility run by Cypress Healthcare Management.

This includes: Sherwood Manor, Lakewood Quarters, and Regency Hospital LTAC. While these places hire on spot (CNA or no CNA), Sherwood Manor is constantly in trouble with the state (and Channel 9 news!!!! use google, I do not lie), Lakewood Quarters is slightly better but still pretty bad, and why do Regency LTAC when Promise LTAC is so much better to work for. (Promise is going to want CNA, though) None of those will pay for CNA, though.

In New Orleans, beware of Covenant House and Ferncrest Manor.

All these bad facilities I warned you about have reputations of paying very low and running very short staffs with high complaints amongst the Louisiana CNA community.

EDIT: To be honest, do not expect pay to be all that just starting out or with no cert. Many do hire without it, but the pay, none the less, is low. We are talking federal minimum to 8 USD. Consider Mental Health, too. Oceans Behavioral, a geri psych hires folks without the cert from time to time. Night shift is better in a geri psych. Day shift is better in an adult and pediatric psych.

Get your cert and go from there.

Louisiana Tech College is about 650.00, your in theory for 10 weeks then there is a 2 weeks clinical. I qualified for pell grant so it wass free. Class was 8- 930 m-f. Classes filled up pretty fast. The cna class does count toward your lpn. I took a compass test I believe it was 5.00 dollars. You also that your cpr class while in theory.

Thanks for the heads up, I recently applied to all the Cypress mgmt facilities and received a call back for an interview with Regency, but I'm not in the state yet so they person who contacted me told me to call when I get in. :uhoh3: Oh well, guess I will continue to job hunt.
