Get reamed out in front of everyone

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Today I got reamed out in the residents dining room while they were eating. Family members were there as well as other staff. While it bothered me, I just looked at the RN who was yelling at me and wondered if she KNEW how much of a fool she looked like. :jester: :clown: :jester: :coollook: I almost pointed it out to her but kept my mouth shut.

The reason her knickers were twisted is that I did not do 1 shower. I let her know quietly and she went ballistic on me in front of everyone. Never mind that I did the other 4 showers. Who cares about that? No, I don't make it a habit of not doing my showers...

I just thought it was interesting how upset that RN became. Sheesh, Activan or Valium, needed in the dining room.

:lol2: :lol2::lol2:

So have you ever been reamed at and had an audience? What did you do or didn't do to deserve it?

Make a note of this. If it happens again, you might want to speak to the next supervisor up the chain. Whether you deserved the admonition or not, that was not the time, place, or way to do it. The nurse's supervisor will want to know that she is conducting herself in this manner in front of family members and visitors. After all, the residents have a right to eat their meal in peace.

At the facility I work at, that type of behavior is common place.

Maybe you could do some casual job hunting then? Unless, overall, you find the place bearable and the pay is tolerable.

I went prn today and have been job hunting, furiously.

Thanks for your post.

This is sound advice. It happens but it should not be tolerated. This behavior is not only disrespectful to you, but it is also disrespectful to the residents and their families. He or she should pull you off to the side and speak with you privately.

That is very unproffesional behaviour, and I would go to her quietly, in private and say that you did not appreciate being yelled at in front of everyone. If she persists in doing it, I would go up the chain and make an offical complaint.

Even if the reason you were yelled at was justified, that was not the time or place to do it, and she should not have spoken to you like that, whatever the issue was. It's rude, humiliating, and very unprofesional.

Common where I am too. I didn't see this one but a nurse got taken down by the admin, in front of everyone a few weeks ago. And he pulled all the staff to the nurses station (CNAs, nurses, probably housekeeping) and pointed out "THAT nurse!" you all make sure THAT NURSE is doing her job! Yeah, big time professionality here too.

Good luck in your search, Kohala! I went PRN yesterday too. But for school reasons. I'm not looking entirely yet but may if the 2 days a week is not tolerable. Trouble is I'm really fond of some of my residents and it's hard to leave them. I didn't expect that to be an issue.

Wow. I would have been so upset I wouldn't have said anything at the time but the next day I would suck up the courage to ask to speak with her privately and then tell her how unprofessional you thought it was and how awful it made you feel. That is no way to make anyone perform better- if someone did that to me I'd be such a nervous wreck around them I'd do everything badly after that. I can't focus when I feel bad about myself or I feel like I'm being "watched."

Why didn't you do the shower?

Yea that is common place at my (now former) facility too. There are too many other facilities in this area & I don't have to put up with that sort of stuff. Best of luck on finding a new job :)

I agree with MisszKimberly...I would probably just bear it quietly the first time it happened. Maybe the nurse was having a bad day or had some personal issue and just snapped. And if it turned out this is the way she routinely treats CNA's, I would probably continue to let it go for as long as I could. But when it started to get to me, I would just turn in my resignation.
