First day tomorrow (yikes)..wish me luck!

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Published

I start tomorrow morning at a hospital on a telemetry/med surg floor. I think its probably normal to be nervous..and boy am I!!! Like I stated before, we didnt get all of our orientation, since someone kept on messing up the schedule. I really wish we got the NA part of the orientation, but will not until the 7th and 8th. I think I would have felt a little better tomorrow, If I was more prepared. I have never even met the nurse manager, and wasnt even really shown around or told anything. So, Im pretty scared lol. What makes it even crazier/chaotic is, my brother, his wife, and 3 kids are arriving at our house sometime tonight. They are driving from South dakota to NY! We drove there once like 7 years ago and it was a LONG ride! I mean Im happy to see them (honestly it doesnt even seem like I have an older brother anymore since I have seen him 2 times in 7 years), but its just the timing and the situation. I have met my one adopted niece 2 times and shes 7, my nephew once and hes 5, and will be meeting my other niece for the first time! My uncle originally told them they could stay there for a while, until they find a place and all of a sudden they cant. They sold everything because of what he told them. So I guess there staying with us, honestly do not know how it is going to work. There will be 9 people here. It is crazy/chaotic/loud enough with us 4 now. I dont sleep as it is..plus Im nervous for tomorrow, and everyone will be here, so Im just hoping I can get some sleep this week! Please wish me luck :) :uhoh3:

i wish you tons and tons of luck

set your alarm, get a good breakfast, put on some good sneakers and go for it

Don;t let anyone ruin your first day at work. It won't be perfect but try to do the best you can. Remember to listen more than you talk LOL

AND yes your house will be loud and crazy so be ready. You are a very kind and nice person to let your family stay at your house, very very sweet and unselfish of you.

Don't talk about your personal situation on the first day or for awhile, just concentrate on the task at hand. Good luck to ya, everyone is nervous on their first day.

Good luck!!

Wishing you the best!

Good luck!! Try to get rest, eat a good meal, make sure you're hydrated, and trust that your co-workers will be there to help. Don't hesitate to ask questions- everyone has had a "1st day at the new job" at some point in their lives.

Darn it, I just typed the whole thing and it disappeared some how! I got home a little while ago from my first day. I dont know how I feel/think. Im sure everyone is unsure at first. I just hope I can get used to it. The girl I was training with today, was not necessarily a bad person (that I know of yet), but she was very loud, blunt etc., the opposite of me. She only did vitals once (even though I think others might more)? It was so chaotic, I cant even remember what we did and when. She touched the oxygen lines, etc...are you allowed to do that? She also stopped the feeds (really didnt see how she did it). It seemed like mostly everyone was pooing and peeing all over (also right after changing them/the bed). One guy even almost peed all over my new shoes. I think that the yucky stuff is what I am having a hard time dealing with now. I dont even know if I was making the beds right lol (especially not sure how to change bed with person in it). She charted some stuff a few hours later after she did it..honestly dont know how she remembered what to put/if she just made some stuff up. I feel nauseous now...I dont know if I just have to eat, plus its hot, and just maybe squeamish from today. Hoping it grows on me/ that I can get it down. (well I guess Ill never love the nasty stuuf but you know lol). How long of training did you get before you were on your own/how many patients at first. I honestly dont know how 1 person can do most of this work. I work tomorrow,Wednesday, and Friday..so we will see I guess.

She only did vitals once (even though I think others might more)?

It all depends on the floor, and the patients she had. Maybe they only had to have their vitals taken Q12H, or in other words, once a shift (assuming you work a 12 hour shift).

Yes, you are.

She also stopped the feeds (really didnt see how she did it).

When I was working on a vent/trach unit, we did have to stop the feeds when we were giving care such as giving baths, peri care, etc.. it's not a big deal.

I think the issue you're having is since you mentioned in past posts that you're not a CNA..being in healthcare is really fulfilling, but at the same time you will have to encounter your fair share of bodily fluids..I'm sure everyone here on this board can remember a time where they've been peed on, pooped on, etc..it goes with the territory.

Why do you assume she made the vitals up? When I take vitals, I keep a small notepad with me & write down the results for each patient. She might do the same thing.

I dont think she made the vitals up, but think she did make some other stuff up. She was putting just anything down for what arm she did bps on, also how much one guy ate. She was pulling tubes apart/clamping them (shes allowed to do that)? She was doing something and she was like you didnt see me do that. How do you remember every single thing if for example ,(if you dont write every single thing down) she didnt chart it until a few hours later. For the I'S AND O'S the very small chart they have doesnt seem too helpful (how to know how much they are taking in based on what they are eating). She was like if you ever need help..ask. Well based on todays patients I would probably need help most of the time, and noone is going to help you all the time. We had many confused, heavy, non-cooperating patients. I am going to continue to try and hopefully it will work out.

Charting hours later is something she's probably doing all the time. Maybe she always takes the BP on the same arm. Who knows! Lol It's just one of those things you get used to doing. She might have a good memory, but I know I don't so I'd be writing everything down!

You will get used to hustling and once you're in a routine it won't seem as overwhelming. I know when I first started, it blew my mind how they knew what to do next and how fast they got it done. I never thought I'd be that good. Now, I know I'm one of the best CNAs at my facility. You just have to want it and try your hardest. You'll get there!! I promise.

Thanks Dondie!
