CHOP vs. JEFF new grad Advice??

Published

Hey!

I just graduated with a BSN in May 2007. I got two offers.. one at CHOP Pediatric ICU and Jefferson Neuro ICU. Can someone help me with Jefferson's benefits and retirement programs?? I went to the website but there weren't any info on 401k.

I want to know which hospital is better to work at. Thanks!!

Hmmm in my opinion I would go to Jeff. I am unsure if CHOP has the same benefits as UPenn...if so it is worth looking into. UPenn still offers a pension and unlimited tuition reimbursement and 10,000 for loan repayment if you are there 5 yrs. However, CHOP has the lowest salary in Phila. My friend works in the Neuro ICU at Jeff. They get 4 weeks vacation, they match the 403 I think. No loan repayment, and limited amount of tuition reimbursement.

I just graduated from Jeff and had my neuro rotation in their ICU. It was a great learning experience, you'll see everything! It cemented my decision to start my career in neuro rehab. I imagine working with peds would be way different, especially emotionally. If peds is your passion, go to CHOP.

As a hospital, Jeff is huge and crowded with tiny little patient rooms. I REALLY don't like the teaching environment on the floors. So many doctors/residents/students/nurses all having attitude problems and clogging up the halls.

All the nurses seemed to really like the ICU, though. Many in the step down units were hoping to be transferred over there. You should be proud to have been offered the job!

Do you mean Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh? And Jefferson Hospital near Pittsburgh? Those I know about, Philly, I don't know

I was talking about Philly. The CHOP here is part of UPENN.

buddababy2monster- thanks, i am also a new graduate of Jefferson. Maybe we were in the same class.

Thanks for all the input. I am going to have to decline CHOP. I will accept the offer for Neuro ICU at Jeff. Thanks!

thekewi - I was FACT, how about you? I know one girl from my class had a scholarship and accepted a position in the NICU.

CHOP and HUP are two different entities. They are not in the same system and do not offer the same benefits. They are mearly neighbors.

If peds is your passion.. even though CHOP is the lowest paying hospital around, i would def take the job at CHOP... I have heard that if you get a Job there you can get a job anywhere you want!! Jefferson is also a Great Hospital.. either one is great!

Just curious, if anyone would be willing to give me an estimate of how low paying is CHOP? I've seen in mutiple posts that they are the lowest paying in PA, and I'm considering going to CHOP from out of state with about 2 years experience as a peds RN so any info would be helpful. Thanks!

I can't speak to the pay at CHOP as I don't know. But you might also want to check out the A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Delaware. Just down the road a piece from Philly. Sort of... :)
