Chemistry Warm Up

Published

I am taking Chemistry next semester and I got in the mail today a registration form for an optional Chemistry Warm Up class. It is a week before school starts and is 4 hours 3 days. I am debating whether or not I should sign up. It is a non-credit class of course.

Here is the description:

MATH 752 Chemistry Warm-Up: Math Review For Chemistry

"Don't let Chemistry get you down! Get a head start on the material you will need to succeed in Chemistry. Topics include algebra review, calculator operations, scienctific notation, metric system, and dimensiional analysis and study skils."

Has anyone taken a warm-up class like this before or heard of one? It it helpful? I am leaning towards taking it b/c I am not that great at math...but there goes a week of x-mas break! lol

My intro Chem class was mostly math. But not hard math. Like conversions, grams to kilogram, pounds to kilograms and simple algebra like solving for an unknown if given all other factors. I didn't take a warm up simply because math was always easy for me. You could probably brush up your skills your self via google search and a book from your local library and save some money and time. But if you learn better in a structured environment w/a teacher and regular assignments then go for it. At least it will be fresh on your mind when you actually start the class too bad there is no credit for the class though.....

I'd go for it! I just finished Chem I and we raced through all of what you listed as part of the first chapter of our text. I think it would have been very helpful to have conversions (metric + Celsius and Kelvin Temp), scientific notation and significant figures covered before starting Chem.

Good luck!

If you are not comfortable with math, I say do it. :twocents:

I just finished Chem and did not find it to difficult, but I have a pretty good math background.

I just got one of those too. I guess this is something all schools do. I am going to St Louis Community College-Meramec in Missouri. I don't think I am going to take the class, really only because I do fine with conversions and I need to work as much OT during the break as I can because my husband has been laid off for over a month

I think it's a fantastic idea...that way you'll know the math when class starts and can focus on all the other content. Good luck!

Speaking as someone who took Intro/Fundamentals of Chem, Chem I, Chem II, and am now in Organic Chem...

If you are going to take a fundamentals/introductory course, you may not need this warm-up, because much of it will be covered at a slow enough pace.

If you are going right into Chem I, then DEFINITELY consider it. In Chem I, we covered most of the Intro/Fundamentals stuff in the first 4 weeks. Because I had had fundamentals already, I sailed through the first 4 weeks of Chem I. However, students in my Chem I class who had not had Chem in a long time were really struggling. The professor expected them to understand things like dimensional analysis already.

Also, getting comfortable with the metric system and conversions within the metric system (like milli to kilo to nano and back again...), is really going to help you and take some of the nervousness out of the experience of taking Chem. And being able to quickly make your calculator give you the answer you need is a very valuable skill.

I would have jumped at that kind of course if my school had offered it! Feeling comfortable with the math (and other stuff, like nomenclature) made all the difference for me in Chem I. I got a 100 on my first Chem I exam. :)

Good luck! Chemistry is everything!!! LOL

I am very excited for next semester to start, Chem is the last pre-erq I have to do before I can get on the waiting list. The only thing that concerns me is in my post high school days I flunked alot of classes and so my GPA is kinda low and you are required to have a 2.5 to enter. If I get all A's (exception of my BIO class this semester I will have a B---- first time back to school and had to re-learn how to study) I will have a 2.46 if I figured it right. I am hoping that they will let me slide in, if not I guess I will take whatever class I have to take to get my GPA where it needs to be. Darn me and my stupidity.
