Chemistry Study Group for Spring 2009

Published

I am starting my third chemistry class on January 12th (tomorrow!!) and was wondering if anyone was interested in forming a study group (or if there is already one on here that I did not see yet?)

Kristi :)

cm cubed = 1mL

Density = Mass divided by volume

solving for mass... this formula looks like this: m= D x V

m = 19.3g/mL x 820mL (which is 0.82 L) = 15,826 g, which is 15.8 kg (but you only should have 2 significant figures; so I would round up the number to 16kg

If anyone got a diff answer, please help ;)

You are correct. I just wanted to double check myself since my cousin and I were working on it together, she was confusing me and moving her decimals the wrong way and I thought I was right.

hi can anymore explain the difference between theoretical yield and experimental yield

thanks

Your answer is in your question. Theoretical yield is an estimated calculated yield and experimental yield is what you yield from an experiment.

Theoretical yield is the maximum amount of product that can be produced be the amount of reactants that are used. When a chemical reaction is performed in the lab, the actual amount of product that is collected is called the actual yield/experimental yield.

Does that help?

I got my second lab back. I figured I would bomb it - I started with 6.5g of material I had to sort out and ended up with 7.0g split apart - go figure. Anyway, I got a 120% on the lab!!!! We have to submit our labs electronically and my teacher liked my layout so much he asked me to post the directions so the others in the class would know how to do it. He gave me extra points for it. Good bless my teacher! :lol2:

That's awesome!!!

Made a 79 on the last test. I've just been swamped with this class. Me and this other girl had the 2 highest grades in the class...a couple others passed. The other class that meets on Monday nights..NO-ONE passed! He even said someone in there got a zero! And we don't even have lab! He gave everyone their tests back and make corrections and you'd get 1/2 credit for them. That's a high B for me so I'm cool! Hope you continue to do well :)

Any suggestion for study help and is the study group still gong on? If soo please count me in:bow: ( I need all the help I can get). What exactly do you need help with

I was having a hard time as well. 4 students (incl. me) passed in my class and only 2 from his other class.

I didn't have much help in terms of study groups and tutoring was offered by the instructor:banghead:

What I ended up having to do was:

1)I did all my reading before lecture. We only met once a wk so I had to make sure to divide my time up and work chemistry in EVERY day.

2) my book had a few questions after each section. Those were our HW even though he never checked. I did those.

3)we also had a workbook/study guide. I did ALL the questions in there.

4)after lecture I would re-type my notes. Any charts, etc. from the book he emphasized, I found the ppt. online at the book's website and printed it and in my binder it went. (check ur book's website for ppts, quizzes, etc)

5)I attended the tutoring anyways. He sometimes was a little more laid back in tutoring and would explain things better than in class. Check for tutoring in your school....it's free.

6)At the end of the chapter, we had review questions, pre-test and more challenging questions. I did all of those. Sometimes those questions would apply things in a different way that wasn't explained by the instructor or in the chapter. The concept was there, however, and you just had to apply it.

This may seem like a lot (and it was) but it's what I had to do to be able to keep what I was learning in my head (once a wk classes SUCKED) and be able to bring my grade up. My first test was a 42 (no-one passed that test) but I managed to pull an A for the course in the end.

Hope you were able to take something from my post. I wish you the best!

Hi Kathy,

Thank you so much for all your suggestion:D. I'll be applying your suggestion to my next study session. And thankfully I started tutoring last week. My first two test were sooo bad:crying2:. I'm hoping I can atleast bring up my next test grade up and do good enough on the final to pass the class, I'm not ready to give up yet.:bluecry1:

Congrats on gettin an A in the class!!!!!

Thanks again,

Dawn
