***Chemistry - Fall 2005***

Who else is taking Chemisrty this semester? I thought maybe we can check in with each other, and help each other out.

If there is enough of us maybe we can even get a sticky.

I am taking Health Science Chemistry 1.

i'm so sorry you are so worried! i am sure you did fine! i have complete faith in you! everyone stresses after a test. i'm sure you are looking at an a. don't worry. i'm sure you got that bonus question right again!

you'll hear my horrible test score tomorrow and it'll make you feel all better about yours! :chuckle

you'll be fine! we're always here for you to ramble to! :icon_hug:

okay does anyone else out there feel very stressed, trying to figure out this chemistry? we had lab today, the first assignment was to write 9 formula's for dichlorocyclohexane. thankfully there was a very smart girl i was partner's with, otherwise i would have been completely lost. we are expected to know this stuff, even though the only requirement is high school chem, which for me was over 23 years ago. i don't remember this stuff. another question was to write down the cis and trans formula for this dichlorocyclohexane, dichlorocyclopentane. this is feeling very overwhelming to me. i don't know how i will make it through this class. all of my pre reqs are done, except this one. wouldnt it be a shame to not make it into the nursing program because of chem class? ugh.. :stone

WOW!

Had my first chem test today and all I have to say is wow. My professor is on probation for failing too many students but from what I saw today, that hasnt changed the way he tests. I studied and felt good about it going in but by the time I was done my brain ached. There were atleast five that I had to work at for a while. Only about three people actually finished before time was up. I am truly trying to make an A in this class but I may have even gotten a C on this test.....yikes.

I hope the rest of you are having better luck. I am pretty sure we get the grades back tomorrow and we shall see. TTFN!

Thanks Paula7, and I am sure you did well too! :)

SkanauxRN2009, I am so stressed. Then again, my oldest daughter told me not to stress as much with this class as I did with the others. lol I hope things get better for you. (Send that smart girl over here to help me!) lol

lizzieB05: I can't believe an instructor gets put on probation for too many failing students. He must think y'all are all getting a PhD in Chemistry during your first chemistry course... :chuckle

Good luck to us all, I hope we are all just stressing for no reason at all. :)

I am really stressing over Chemistry and I wasn't until I found out the teacher that I had. Our teacher teaches his lessons off of a power point presentation. All he does is read off of it and kind of elaborate on it. Not much though. Today we was figuring out the element 109 which is Mt and he was like what is that? Never heard of that one. Hello shouldn't he know this?? It is just getting really frustrating. I wish I had looked at other colleges to take this class because from what I see on that ratemyprofessor.com I should have taken it at another college. 2 others actually. We will have our first test soon. We will be doing a review on Wednesday and than the test will be in the testing center from Friday till I think he said that next Wed. I just really wish he taught good. None of the power point presentations come from the textbook. I don't want to have to retake this class.

i think we have all decided chemistry sucks! :angryfire

i got an 83 on my first exam which isn't excellent but it was the 4th highest grade in the class and a b so i'm going to take it!

we have moved onto nomenclature and i am so lost!

changing the names???? so lost! :banghead:

that is the understatement of the year! lol

83 is good!! congrats!!!!

for nomenclature, make sure you remember your prefixes, and when & when not to use them

.... a hint: for 6 and 7 (hexa & hepto) think "hex a hippo". lol

do you have to memorize any polyatomics such as no2- or no3- ......... if so, i did put a quiz on my site for those. i'm not sure what all ones you need to memorize, but if you have nano3-, you will need to know it's sodium nitrate, & not sodium mononitrogen trioxide or not sodium nitrogen oxide. :)

good luck!!!!! i actually was confused on this as well at first, but i went to the tutoring center & had someone help me with them, & downloaded worksheets to practice more at home.

these pages may help:

lalajenn: i'm sorry you class is like that. i do like my instructor, i just wish he would elaborate more. we do a couple of problems in class, which are ones on the powerpoint. then the same, or almost the same (maybe 1 number difference) question is on the extra credit homework!! uggggh!

when i go to tutoring to do the extra credit homework, i don't want the same or almost the same questions i have seen already!!!!!

good luck everyone!

thanks for the links fun2care.

have quiz tomorrow. we'll see how it goes!

time to study! :typing

Yes it is almost unanimous that Chemistry sucks:) I do like my class as I don't think anyone feels "dumb" asking questions and so we ask enough questions that I think we actually understand the spectrum thing:)

Okay, off to study----unless I find a good thread:)

I seem to *think* I understand it in class, but I do ask a few questions. My problem is once I get home, I'm lost.

Paula7: Good luck tomorrow. (Hey, I study like that too..:typing...like I'm doing right now!!! LOL)

I'm taking chemistry 101 and my teacher is by far the worst I've so far. He's a foreign teacher and no one can understand a word he says. I'm having a tough time in this class as is everyone else. I got an 86% on my first test which is good but I don't know how long I can hold on to grades like that. I've basically decided to teach myself whats in the book (he goes strictly by the book) which helps a little. I kinda have to pass this class the first time around so I don't know what to do if i can't. It's really got me a little scared. Well I've got to go to class so good luck to you all and if I can help I sure will try my best. :chair: :selfbonk:

I understand what you mean. The first time I took college algebra, I had to drop b/c of the instructor's accent.

Now, it seems you're understanding a little chemistry to make 86% on your first test. Congrats! :)

I would just try to stick it out, and go to tutoring if your school offers it. Thank goodness he goes by the book! :)

Good luck!!!!

Well I am glad I am not the only chem student feeling this way. When I first looked at this stuff on paper, I thought.....uh...what? like I really don't get it, hahaha. That smart girl is fresh out of high school chem and she makes it sound so easy. I am slowly catching on, but it is only going to get harder. I hope we all get A's through it all.
