Chemistry Fall 2010

Published

Is there already a thread for those of us taking Chemistry this fall? I know I could definitely use one!

My class starts the 31st.

I am starting my chemistry this fall 2010.

I start Intro to Chemistry at santa monica college this fall..

I took Intro Chemistry this summer in a 10-week course and it was a killer. I got an A in it, but just barely. My instructor was tough and not very helpful, and the fact that it was an accelerated course made it all the more difficult. I actually really enjoyed some of the material, which made having a mediocre instructor pretty frustrating.

All of the material really builds on previous concepts, so really the biggest tip I have is to make notes or flash cards of the "big idea" concepts in each chapter (i.e., significant figures, electron configurations, writing chemical formulas, etc.) because you will definitely need to know them for future quizzes or tests, even if the test isn't "cumulative" in the traditional sense.

Chemistry does involve a lot of math, so if you don't have a fairly solid foundation in algebra going into the course you'll probably struggle. Our instructor told us that on the first day.

Also - I bought a big poster of the periodic table for $10 or $15 at Michael's and hung it in my study and that saved me a lot of time flipping back and forth in the book when I was doing homework. Highly recommended. :)

Great idea! Thanks for the tips!

I am taking Chem and Anatomy this semester....I hated alegebra so I am already worried about it.

Starting a gen/bio/organic chemistry class on 8/28...very nervous....

Specializes in none.

I'm also taking chemistry(general) this fall. My classes start on the 1st. Good luck everyone. :yeah:

Went to my first class today. The professor seems great, really helpful. The bummer though is online homework through the Pearson portal, so I have to buy the access card.

We covered scientific notation and measured vs. exact numbers. There are three tests and a final that is 75% of the grade, the online homework is 25% of the grade.

Best wishes to everyone, L.

Specializes in NICU Nurse.

So I started my Chem class yesterday..The instructor is very nice but she has a very heavy bolgarian accent and she is sometimes hard to understand.

I am so nervous to see how well I do in this class. We just went over basic stuff yesterday and had orientation. I looked at a few things in the book and it is complete gibberish to me! EEEK!!!

I have Lecture on Monday and Lecture/Lab on Wednesday

I am also taking A&P1 this semester too (along with Developmental Psych and Humanities) so this will be a very busy semester!!

I hope we all can help each other because I am worried about this class.

Well, I signed into the Pearson online part for homework and I am seriously reconsidering if I want to stay in the class.

I went through the intro lessons which teach you how to enter your answers in their system and it was very frustrating. This was not graded per se, but it took me over an hour for a 10 section tutorial.

When I had Algebra homework, I could work a little, then walk away and come back to it when I felt I could. You know how you get like a brain lock when you're concentrating so hard on a problem. The online homework seems like it just adds extra pressure.

I have class again tomorrow, so I guess I'll discuss it with the professor.

Did anyone else have this online homework with Chemistry? Sorry, I know I'm whining.

Did I mention I hate online homework.

:-[ Best, L

Oh no. :(

Are you taking any other classes? If you are, maybe consider lightening your load just for this semester?

I don't know til next week when my class starts if we have online homework, but I hope you are able to work it out.

I had my first class today. My teacher is very energetic and seems to really care about her students understanding the material. Our grade will be based on 3 tests, a final, 5 online quizzes, 8 labs, and attendance/participation. We went over units, conversions, and significant numbers today. So far, not so bad. I haven't read the chapters yet though, so we'll see. How was everyone else's first day.
