I am starting Chem II this semester. Anyone want to start a club???

We did earlier in the semester ... but we were very lucky in that we were required to know it on a very basic level only (I'm in Gen Chem I). We didn't have to know the formulas involved nor perform actual calculations... thank GAWD. We touched on the basics of Bohr's work and just had to understand the conepts of electron energies and relationships between wave energies, wavelengths and frequency. And, we focused a lot on Schrodinger's model of quantum numbers used to describe electron energies and orbitals to include Pauli's exclusion principle and Hund's rule.

Is your class required to know how to perform all the calculations?

Actually not, the class that I'm taking is unfortunately a very rudimentary one that is barely above high school chemistry. But I bought myself a more advanced textbook and I'm wondering what the standard is for general Chemistry.

That's awesome...good for you! I'm all about the challenge myself :)

I have just registered to take Chemistry over the summer from July to August (six week course). I know that summer classes can be intense due to their length....hope I can keep up. I'm a little nervous. Wish me luck! :lol2:

Anyone else taking chemistry over the summer?

Specializes in None.

I am taking Chemistry right now, and it is a hard class. Unfortunately the teacher I have does not know how to teach nor respects his students or their learning styles. In essence I really have to teach myself this class, but not to discourage because if you have a decent professor you can pull an A off. My advice: Ask around about the teachers before your sign up with them, it will save you time, energy, and sanity!

hi everyone,

i am taking intro to chemistry this term, and so far i think it is very fascinating. i really enjoy the class so far. we aren't that far into the subject matter yet, but the labs are fun.

is recitation a requirement for every chemistry class, or is it just my school that makes us do this?

it is almost like study hall, and quite frankly i find it useless. it's mandatory attendance if you want to pass the lecture - does anyone really find this a valuable resource for chemistry?

i hope everyone has a great term!

i am also taking chemistry in the summer program. i am also taking intermediate alegebra. i am so nervous!

i work full time and i am going to the main campus of my college which is like 40 minutes away from the house we just bought. sooo my first class is at 7:30am and i am in classes with a 45 minute break inbetween untill 1:00pm monday-thursday. i work six days a week. 4 days 4:00pm to 10:30pm and 2 days 8:30am-4pm.

so i guess my typical day will be

get up 6am

leave house by 6:45 am

classes till 1pm

get home by 1:45pm

leave for work by 3:30pm

get home by 11:00pm

repeat 4x a week!

i know the other 2 days of the week will be spent studying.

i told my boyfriend to not expect any quality time with me for those 5 weeks this summer.

i am so nervous that i won't sleep for the whole 5 weeks of the summer but i am going to put my best foot forward and i am going to get AWESOME grades in both these courses.

hopefully lol.

if anyone wants to chat this summer and are taking chemistry just pm me. we can help each out with studying :D

What is recitation?

what is recitation?

well, with no context given, i just pulled up a def from wikipedia:

a recitation is a discussion carried by a teaching assistant (ta) to supplement a lecture given by a senior faculty at an academic institution. during the recitation, tas will review the lecture, expand on the concepts, and carry a discussion with the students. in classes with a mathematics aspect, the recitation is often used to perform derivations or solve problems similar to those assigned to the students.

hope that helps....if not, could you give some context for the word? we might be able to help more with more information.

peace,

cathie

Ok yea we have that at my school, except its called SI (Supplemental Instruction) and it is an option, not requirement. Although the way alot of my professors teach, it definately should be mandatory!

Hi Everyone,

Is recitation a requirement for every Chemistry class, or is it just my school that makes us do this?

Just depends on the school I think. My school does require recitation in other courses but not for general chemistry.

Im taking general chem this semester and i enjoy it alot. I have a very good prof. :monkeydance: :monkeydance: :monkeydance:

Me, too! I have Chem 1 June 11-Aug 2, I am scared to death! :uhoh21: I just got the book and glanced through it and wonder what the heck I am thinking doing this during the summer! I saw the term "mole" and cannot for the life of me remember what that is, the only meaning that has had for me the past few years are as some horrible creatures that got into our shed and made a nasty mess!

I also have Biology this summer, but it is distance learning from May-Aug. I am hoping I can get a lot of that done before Chem starts. My chem class is also 2 hours away, 4 days a week, so I am just dreading it on all levels. :o I will have my daycare kids here 7:30-4 over the summer, so I'm hoping they will be happy playing outside a lot and I can study while watching them!
