Changing Careers at 29 - Am I Crazy?

Published

I know it is extremely common for women to change careers later on and choose nursing as their new career choice. But I honestly feel totally overwhelmed at the thought of how I will achieve this. I don't even have a date in site for when I could even apply to a program. I am a full-time graphic designer in the Dallas area. I make a decent salary but despise my career choice. All I want is to be able to start over and choose Nursing as my career. I have a few prereqs out of the way, and plan to take as many classes as I can before applying. But how in the world will I be able to go to nursing school and take care of financial obligations (home & auto loans, bills, raising a 2-year old with daycare expenses, etc - you get it).

I would love to attend El Centro in Dallas. If anyone has been or is in my same situation please share your insights with me. I guess I just need someone to say "Yes, it's possible".

Thanks - Bridget

uh huh. all part of the package. to paraphrase steve martin in the movie "parenthood" ... some like the roller coaster. some like the merry-go-round.

are we crazy? uh huh. but there is a fine line between genius and insanity.:D

I just hope I'm on the "genuis" side of the fence! There are days that I wonder!

:rotfl: I don't do rollercoasters anymore....I prefere the merry-go-round, it's gentler on my bones!

You are not crazy! My major in my country, Colombia, was CIS (Computer Information Sistems) but now I want to become a RN. I am 28 year old, living in California and with a "major" difficulty: I have to deal with a new language (English). I am just begining with the prerequisites and I still need to pass English 1A (Reading and Composition)... everything seems so difficult for me but I will not give up. So don't worry about your age, or your chanching carrers because if the others careers didn't make you feel happy, maybe nursing is the answer.

Don't be afraid of a&p, there are a lot of esl students in my class, and they are getting through! Just beleive in yourself, study hard, and you will make it. Good luck!

uh huh... I look around the room in Bio 102 and wonder... "how many of these children really understand what the term "grading on a curve" really means? and do they have any idea how much they should really hate me?"

This is hilarious.

My father, who went back to school in the late seventies at 46, used to say he, too, was afraid when he first started, that he would never be able to keep up with the "kids" in his classes.

He told me that it took one quiz to realize they would have to work to keep up with HIM.

Hey, I'm 29 and just got accepted to Emory for Nursing. No, you aren't crazy, you're making a very smart decision.

YES it is possible. Life is FAR too short to spend even the smallest amount of time in a job that you hate. Go for the gold.

hi i agree

i am 28 will be 29 in aug. i am starting a LPN program in the summer. I always wanted to be a L&D nurse. i have 2 girls 4 and 1 and been Teaching GA Pre K for the last 6yrs. i will be giving up alot and because my income is needed just as my hubby's i chose an LPN program so i can work sooner. with hope to go to a LPN-RN bridge in the next 2yrs. NO you are not crazy and just cause we are comfortable and feel like the Big 30 is coming will stil have a whole lot of life to live.

Dont put off what you can do today for tomorrow!

GO 4 it

Good luck

You are not crazy, but I do think I am. I am a food and beverage manager who just got burned out and fed up with all the brown nosing and back stabbing in the foods service industry. I am going back into healthcare and to finally getting my degree but in nursing. However, I was wondering if anyone could help me on how I can get my foot back in the door for healthcare?

Many probably most American workers will retrain once or twice during their career. Retirement age is now 67 - this means you have almost 40 years to go. So in short no you're not crazy - what you're thinking about is just another chapter of life in our time. Look for financial aid, find a part time program, or a program with online lecture classes so that you only have to attend clinicals, get a job with flexible hours so that you can work your clinicals around your job. It can be done.

you are not crazy at all. i think you are a very brave, smart, amazing woman. I had several women in my prereq classes who were in the 50s. In fact, MOST of the people in my classes were 30-60. So you are not at all crazy. Good for you and good luck to you!:yeah:
