Challenging the LPN boards

Published

I am currently getting my BSN but I got permission to take the LPN boards. I know that most things are the same but the roles can be very different in regards to delgating and what can LPN do or not do versus the RN.

How should I study?

How much time should I give to study?

What material will help me pass the boards?

What are most important tips for LPN's to know for example, blood product, can not give IV push etc.

Any tips in answering the questions? I brought Saunders-PN and the questions are very different then what I'm use to

I challenged LPN boards while attending a BSN program and quite frankly back then did not find any delegation questions that dfferentiated between the roles of an LPN and RN. But that was then. I would advise you to stick with the LPN version of a review, like Saunders or ATI, and pay particular attention to delegation questions that are presented from the LPN perspective. You should be on track if you do this. Good luck.

You are not actually challenging the PN exam, you must have completed the necessary hours to be given permission to sit for the exam by your state.

To challenge the exam means that something was waived, and this is not the case. Just wanted to clear this up for you.

Most definitely go with the PN Review book. Each state can set their own requirements for what an LPN/LVN can and cannot do and it will vary between states as well as between hospitals. Use the book for specifics that are needed for the exam, and not what your state's requirements are as the exam is national in nature and not state specific.

Best of luck to you.

I've just withdrawn from the 5th semester of an ADN program. I'm trying to find a state that will allow me test for LPN...Please let me know if you know of any states that will allow such.

You should start by inquiring with the Board of your own state. And if it is allowed, then ask your school. If your school does not cooperate, then you are out of luck. Not all schools do this for their students.

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

You need to contact BON's and see if they will accept your transcripts. You just can't pick a state that allows you to sit and then try and endorse to the state you live or work as they may not accept your transcripts

Also you are not challenging the boards but looking for acceptance to be licensed as a LPN

My state doesn't allow it...it requires completion of course

If this is the case, then I seriously doubt that your school will sign off on your application. Sorry.
