I think Kaplan Review is good. I had my review with them and it helped me so much. All of the review materials for CGFNS and NCLEX are the same except some of their actual Q & A with their instructors. So, if you review for both exams then I think it would be a good option to schedule your NCLEX a month after you took CGFNS. Godbless!

First question before anything is: Why are you taking the CGFNS exam in the first place? It is only required for a handful of states in the US. It will not benefit you in getting a job unless you are required to have it for the state where you will be working.

Save your money, and if it was an agency that told you that you needed it, run as fast as you can from them as they will continue to give you wrong information. You are new here, and we see this all of the time.

Hate to tell you but your family member is 100% incorrect. That was even the reason that many were going thru NY as they were one of the first ones to remove the requirement of the CGFNS Certificate.

NY requires a special credentials eval done by CGFNS called the CSV, but definitely no CGFNS exam. All that will do is delay things for you. The other issue that you may not be aware of is that not one hospital in the state of NY has been petitioning for foreign nurses, even those that train there are having problems.

Please take the time to read the Primer at the top of the International Forum for factual information that you need to know to work in the US.

cgfns exam/certificate is required for a handful of states only. the cgfns certificate is not the same as the visa screen certificate, that also comes thru cgfns; but is required for all foreign nurses to work in the us in the role of a nurse.

cgfns is a requirement of some states for licensure.

vsc is required by us immigration.

even filipino officials were getting this incorrect in the news there recently.

And if you care to work in a hospital, they want to see a passing score on the NCLEX-RN exam, they could care less about the CGFNS exam.

Absolutely no reason in the world to write that exam, unless you are going to work where it is required. And NY is definitely not one of the states.

Having the CGFNS Certificate will not speed ip things for there, you still need to go thru their process, the only way that they will accept anything.

I think the more important question is where do you want to live?? There are only a handful of states require CGFNS but most require some other involvment mainly CES. There are a few BON's who do their own evaluation. Each state is different and even if endorsing you have to meet requirements of foreign trained nurse.

I said handful meaning five or so, not sure where you came up with 20.

But I agree 100% with Anna, you should pick a state because you wish to work there, not because of their requirements.

And you can do a review on the International forum to find the states that are included.

hi suzzane and anna,

thanks so much, u have given me a lot of info. i would like to work in chicago, i know that cgfns is no longer required since oct 2005 and i have known abt this last month, though i'm already rostered in cgfns i'll just go on w/ the exam and take nclex afterwards.

would you suggest me to go to an agency or apply nclex by myself? if i wanted to be licensed in chicago, is it possible that i'll apply in vermont? how will i go about licensure in chicago?

Thanks a lot and more power!

If you wish to work in Illinois, then you need to go thru their process and they require the CES before they will issue you permission to sit for the NCLEX exam. Not sure how you think that VT will benefit you. You still have to go thru the requirements for Illinois. There is a thread on what you will need to do.

When are you rostered for? You may wish to consider having them apply the funds to the CES, if you have ten weeks, if not, there is nothing that you can do.
