Celebrity Patients - Who would you want?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Living in the "Entertainment Capitol of the World", we get a lot of celebs in the hospitals. In addition, there are the one's who live here, commute here, work part-time here and occasionally need home health, hospice, etc.

My first assignment as a Nurse Case Manager was to a show on the Strip for the headliner, cast, and crew. No, this wasn't one of the 'showgirl' shows (did that too), this was one of the many broadway-based shows. When any of member of the show had an injury, I was called to get them to a doctor appropriate for the injury, meet them at the doctor's office to make sure they were seen NOW, go in with them to the doctor, make sure their needs were met, and relate all important info to the show manager. Yes, some of it meant going the extra mile and picking them up at their home and taking them to the appointment (MY KNEE! MY KNEE! I need help! ). That was just the tip of the iceberg - not to mention teaching about injuries, having to develop treatment plans for the injuries they could sustain from the choreography and the elaborate costumes with the physical therapist. Rendering first aid from burns from the pyrotechnics, etc. It was a lot!!

Now, I was a rather naive girl growing up, and had never been exposed to "alternative" lifestyles so up close and personal before  . Dealing with sooo many different personalities, extremes, and DRAMA kept me on my toes. After a year with this show, I was being called by cast members on anything from how to manage the $4,000 a week they were getting so they had money if they didn't get signed on the next contract, to crying with a cast member who learned his partner was dying of AIDS. It didn't matter if what was wrong had anything to do with the show or not, I was "their nurse". :kiss

The other fun part was having to go out and interview the physicians that the show manager wanted me to hand-select to treat their celebrities. Wow, a nurse deciding a physician's fate for once! (ego boost! ). It was a GREAT job. It was sad because shows do end at some point and folks with stars in their eyes don't always get their $4000 a week (and that was just the supporting cast!) contract renewed, but it was a great reward for this nurse who didn't feel she could do bedside care anymore. At the last performance, I was given a panoramic picture of the cast and crew with all their signatures in a frame saying, "Thank you, our Angel". :)

I have worked with more celebs since then, but, if I could pick one celebrity I'd like to have as a patient, bedside, I'd pick Harrison Ford. He's seems pretty cool to me.

Who would you want?

A patient is a patient. To treat a famous one any better than another is a kind of favoratism that should be reserved for your friends and family. Treat each patient like they are famous. You truely want each and EVERY patient to remember you, whether they be famous or not is beside the point. Remember, famous people get treated very well everywhere that they go, not like the average person. We are medical professionals that must show competence. No one person is greater than another. I'm not sure what a nurse expects when she or he treats a famous person better than all the others but I'm sure many will agree that it is self-serving.

I would love to help deliver Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt's baby. My mother is a flight attendant and said Jennifer Aniston was the nicest celeb that she has ever met. And althought I would not give them any more than my customary high quality of care, I would love to talk to them both. I bet they are very warm people.

Susanmary and rnoflabor2000....I think you are getting the wrong idea here....of course, we nurses all treat our patients with the greatest of care, but this is just pure old fun. You DO get to 'FAN-tisize' once-in-awhile don't you? Gosh, I sure hope so.

I would not treat my favorite celebrities any better than, or worse for that matter, than any of my patients.

There IS a sense of 'awe' that comes with seeing in person those you admire on TV and screen.

See, that's all there is to our 'wacky dreams' here...only fun. Shoot, we all work so hard, we need to think like this occasionally, don't we????? I sure hope so:D

Specializes in cardiac, diabetes, OB/GYN.

I think it might be nice to have Whoopie

Goldberg or Robin Williams for patients. They strike me as funny all the time and I wonder what their true personas would be..To look at I would have to say Kurt Russell, but I have always had a crush on him...Am I boring or what???

I actually met Walter Cronkire once when I was about 5. Here was this man I had seen on tv practically every night all of my life- I was gobstopped. He was extraordinarily kind. He's about the only human being who takes on a godlike aura in my eyes. No celebs I'd like to take care of. Everyone is interesting.

Nannanurse-

OOHHH! I see. Ok, I went back and read the first thread and you are right. There was a simple question hidden at the end of that thread. For me, Gabriel Burne! You'd think at 37 I'd like someone like Tom Cruise, etc. But no one does it more than a man with an accent, although Mel Gibson is handsome, and boy, that accent. But no, it's Mr. Burne. Of course where I work, I expect him to be with his wife and her in labor. So I'd be outta luck.

Of course I give all of my patients equal care (when I am darn good and ready to)-Just kidding.......Trent Reznor ...(with a little antidepressant on board-not too much though) " It's time for your special treatment Mr Reznor" lol!

Who is Trent Reznor?

He is the driving force behind Nine Inch Nails....a-very innovative and influential musician in the alternative-industrial scene.Trained as a classical pianist for years...He writes great dark lyrics( but you have to get past the cursing to appreciate it-I don't listen when my son is around)

Ok, I know NIN, but I just never knew there names...I like the music, I just have never seen them. I am on this infernal computer all day and never get to watch MTV. Yeah I'm only "kinda old" But I will watch for him, love to find a new "hottie" guy as often as I can.

Robin Williams!!!! I'm a sucker for the funny furry ones!!! ;)

Zhrakin...you kill me!!!! The Barney thing is priceless!!! ROFLMAO!!! :D
