CDC rec to counsel all males about benefits of circumcision

Wasn't sure the best place to put this, but here's the article:

CDC Considers Counseling Males Of All Ages On Circumcision : Shots - Health News : NPR

What do you think of this? Have you read the African studies and do you think they translate to our population? Do you think it's a good idea from a public health standpoint?

The default isn't FOR circumcision,

What country do you live in? Because in the United States, the default very much IS for circumcision.

if i had had children, none of the boys would have been circ., that would have been my present to their wives. what hasn't been discussed here, is the difference for women in have sex with circ.ed or uncirc.ed men. the lubrication provided is what nature indented.

Wow, talk about a gift that really needed a way to be returned.... :cyclops:

I wouldn't dare to speak for all women, even most women, but of the women with whom I've had such 'girl talk' (often fueled by ETOH which would keep the topic going!) there was a decided preference for intimate relations with a CIRCUMCISED partner....NOT with one who was 'intact'.

I also have to admit that the idea that if you had hypothetical newborn sons you would be thinking of their hypothetical wives' sexual experiences in the future....well, just a little creepy to me, sorry!

Especially if they practice metzizah b'peh.

Clearly a bizarre and rare practice, and one that no hospital would allow (with good reason). But even WITH that weirdity, it's not like there are daily stories in the news of Orthodox Jewish babies dying by the bucketful.

And hey, certainly there are such bizarre and rare practices that could be considered pretty unhealthy in other religions, too.....attend any ritual exorcisms lately? :wacky:

Not dying, and not by the bucketful, but there have been several babies in the New York area that have contracted herpes from metzizah b'peh. The people involved refuse to identify the mohels or to make them stop the practice. I don't want to attack anyone's religion, but when people become okay with a grown man sucking blood out of a newborn's member, and then protect them after they transmit an incurable lifelong STI to newborns with the practice....I think a line has been crossed.

I know most Jews don't practice metzizah b'peh, but let me ask a question. You said most Jews these days have their sons circumcised in the hospital. So that means a mohel is not doing it and it's not being done on the 8th day. How is it still a religious ceremony under those circumstances?

I must be getting old. Suddenly the fact that males have a member and only females can become pregnant (current SCOTUS case) are addressed by some as "discrimination". Take it up with G-d or Mr. Darwin, depending on your belief system, but for the love of PETE stop whining that we are not androgynous clones and there better be someone to sue over the trials and tribulations of our sex.

I am also amused by those who believe in the rights of others to "choose"......unless they do not agree with someone else's opinion.

Oh, agreed. Icky is icky, and I'll be the first to say that!

It isn't. For those that do it in the ritualistic manner (a moyel, and at home or synagogue) on the 8th day after birth, it's clearly a bris (brit milah). For those who want the covenant made (the circumcision itself) and don't particularly want the rest of the ritual, it can be done by anyone qualified to do it....and for most people today that would indicate a medical professional.

Customs and tradition are not the same thing as law in Judaism, although most don't know the differences, or which is what (and that includes many Jews!). Creating the covenent with G-d in having the circumcision is the goal; who does it isn't of much issue. At least not with those outside of Orthodoxy, anyway. I'm sure those who want their Rabbis to do it would disagree with the approach of those who are in other sects---but isn't that the case with most things?

And the 8th day? Still not a problem, and many definitely do it this way.....haven't known a hospital yet to deny doing it after discharge home (and readmit for the procedure only). Come to think of it, can't see why it can't be done in a pediatrician's office either.....just don't know of any offhand. Some do it during the post-partum hospital stay, and then have the religious portion later.....or hold a naming ceremony instead of a true bris.

As long as it's DONE, that's really the crux of it!

Ok, you actually got me laughing out loud...!! :D Thanks for that! :)

Thanks for explaining, RNsRWe.

LOLOLOLOLOL projection, much.

And that is ridiculous and offensive to my religion where circumcision has been performed for thousands of years.

Sent from my iPhone -- blame all errors on spellcheck

just as female circ have been part of islam for thousands of years, it remains offense to me that anyone would do this, dont expect a free pass on this.

LOLOLOLOLOL projection, much.

"projection, much"? Sorry....what?

Sorry, can't quote on my phone.

Red Kryptonite, I don't think anyone asked for a "free pass." The hubris in your statement is mind-boggling. I think that if you truly are advocating for "intactivism" you should at least try to appear rational so people will listen to you, instead of dismissing your arguments as hysterical ranting.
