For the immunizations do we need to be tested or can we have a doc sign off on vaccination dates? Would the copy of vaccination dates that the public school have on file work?

Thanks for all of the info!!

hi everyone =] NRN101 is allllllll about assessing. You will need it for lung sounds, heart sounds, blood pressure to name a few. The first clinical of the semester is that you will be in a nursing home for 8 weeks.. then switch to a hospital. Nursing home sucks. We basically did an aides work. You really wont need your stethascope here, but most of my clinical group had them already just for practice. I wish you guys luck and hope you got your letters. I remember checking my mail box everyday for about a month and a half waiting for the reply =] im sure you guys will do just fine!

I have nothing against elderly people, but I'm not interested in working at a nursing home either. Everything is just slow paced. Now I'm at an acute care hospital for clinical and I have good days depending on what condition my patient is in and which nurse I'm assigned to work with. In a week or two my clinical instructor is going to test us on head-to-toe assessments, so I've been practicing on patients at my job. They've been really nice to let me do it. Another thing I don't like is writing out med cards and care plans. Do you guys have to do the med surg tool for your clinical?

Lesijoy I am not sure about the answer to your question, but looking at the form I would assume that if you had the vaccinations all you need to do is get the antibody titer (blood test to see if you are immune) your doctor could order that for you. according to the form they are recommending a booster rubeola (measles) be done if your vaccination for that was prior to 1980. Hope that answered your question!

hi everyone =] i know the pain you are going through. Im at the north campus and im in my first semester NRN101. Its challenging but well worth it. I suggest people get the co-reqs out of the way as well.. All i needed when i started the program was ap2 and micro and elective. This semester sucks due to my ap2 class and the nursing class itself. Would much rather just be focusing on the nursing course, but i have to maintain being a full time student. Yes you will need your stethascope. NRN101 is allllllll about assessing. ohh and yes.. you cannot schedule your classes at the registration office.. You get together for orientation and its like a "lottery" type thing. Total caos! Beware of employee CPRs. I sat through a 4 hour cpr class at my work only to find out it wasnt good for ccac and had to do another 4 hour course 2 days before class started. I guess it was easier for me having the summer to get all the immuno. and clearences. I just paid for blood work and 2 days later got what i was immune to and not immune to... i believe it costed around 250 for physical and blood work at concentra.. then i wasnt immune to mumps so JUST GO TO THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT because it is only $10 a shot instead of up to $80 a shot!! and yes the registering for classes needs some adjusting.I need to take micro next semester but couldnt register due to not knowing what days i would have nrn classes.. now im screwed out of it bc all the micros all filled.

I only have about a million questions! Were the books & uniforms expensive? What were your first quizzes and/or test like? What were they over? Any tips to surviving clinicals?! Clinicals in the first semester feel like being thrown to the wolves!!! LOL Also i've read a lot in other posts about the importance of doing well on the dosage calculations exam, do they explain and/or go over dosage calculations? Or are you expected to just know how to do the calc? Thanks again for all your info Nikki!

OK more questions!!! Is there anyone who is already in the program that can tell me if there is a specific type or brand (or color) of stethoscope that we will need? Also do we need to have a certain type or color of shoes? Also do we need a certain brand of bandage scissors? Keeping my mind on the details is keeping me from attacking the postman every time he comes to my mailbox! lol :spbox:

I got home from class and was disappointed by having mail but nothing from ccac. I have been checking my mail box everyday since this time last month just in case they sent the letters out early. I'm reaching my sanity's tipping point.

I bet the nursing dept.s at ccac go on here every semester to see how physced out the potential students are and roar with laughter when they see posted like this. The list was finalized a the last month but through spats of laughter one woman is like:roll "we have to hold it one day more, just one!" :roll and that sends them into another 10 minute fit!!!

I did order a stethoscope online last night. Its a littmann classic II. Allheart.com has good prices on them and there are other ones to choose from.

They will come after Thursday, because that is when I go out of town and will not be back til Sunday night. So mine will be sitting in the mailbox taunting me because I will be 5 hours away!!:sniff::angryfire

Half of the books I used were used. Next semester all of them will definetly be used. Much cheaper than buying them new. The packet that was sent to me listed all of the books that I would need. So I did a search on amazon and ebay for used book prices.

The first quiz we had was on the beginning chapters of the Taylor's book. I think it was about the history of nursing and nursing organizations. We alternate between quizzes and exams every week.

For clinicals we went to an LTC (8 weeks) and did nursing assistant type of work and performed vital signs. We only had 1 skills where we practiced bed making, bed baths, and the importance of patient safety. That was it. Some of my classmates were new to that type of stuff, but I always offered assistance. My clinical intructor wanted us to practice vitals (I already knew how from work but did it anyway since she was watching) and observe the nurses perform skills. Since it was a long term care home, it was boring and not much went on anyway until we took the residents to the dining room for lunch.

In August there was a short dosage calc seminar and that was it. Skills instructors may go over it briefly, but for the most part you're on your own and tutoring services are available. If you read the problems carefully and practice all the time, it won't be so bad.

The nurses on my unit use Littmann Lightweight II SE stethoscope, so that's the one I got. It doesn't matter what color it is as long as you have one. Bandage scissors are bandage scissors. I got those and the stethoscope from allheart.com. The info packet says you need all white shoes with no logos, stripes, or flashy designs. My campus is a little bit linient, so if you have a bit of green or pink on your shoes that's still okay as long as the shoes are mostly white. As for the uniforms, it was expensive. I think I paid around $80? I only got one set since I only have clinical once a week. But it was suggester for 202 we should get another set because we'll have clinical twice a week.
