Ccac/calu spring 2010

Published

Hi Everyone, I just got my acceptance letter today for ccac/calu spring 2010! I thought that it would be a good idea to start a thread for CALU. So that all of us that got accepted can get aquainted since we will be classmates and we can use this thread to share information about CALU & the program..............I am looking forward to meeting everyone!!:D

more info from cal:

you should have the drug screen done the week ending dec 11th.

there are supplies included with the clinical bags but a stethoscope is not one of them. the uniform company that you will be ordering uniforms from sells stethoscopes.

Allegheny got probably 4 more information sheets than we got, one is where to get the tests done (cheaply) and approximate cost. I scanned that sheet and it is here attached. The others were more about uniform stores, better explanation of the background checks, I don't think we missed much.

The tote/clinical bag, basically syringes, needles, what you use in lab (I am hoping we don't pay a lab fee on top). The north campus does not require people to buy it, Allegheny campus it is not offered because of an uproar over the items that should be included in the lab.

I was at the Health Department and got an updated list of costs of vaccines. The prices on the Allegheny Sheet are outdated. I don't have it with me, but from what I remember:

MMR: $10

Varicella: $88

Hepatitis B: $58/shot (3 in the series)

Tetorifice: $10

Titers are still $15.

Also, I wouldn't recommend going to your PCP for anything if you can help it. I'd got to a Med Express to get a physical ($40). I have really GREAT insurance through my employer and I can't get a physical at my doctor's because it's not considered "medically necessary." They won't cover anything school-related. So it'll cost you an arm and a leg to get a physical/titers/vaccines at your normal doctor's office.

In the Boyce packet we also got a very specific book list. Did y'all get that? I'm not sure if books are the same at every campus or not.

Thanks for the update!

CALU no book list at all, the Allegheny packet I got to look at did not have a book list either. Rumor (accent on rumor) is all the books are supposed to be the same for the spring for all the campuses. Therefore you can buy them at any of the campuses that are convenient for you. At least, that is what I was told earlier this week when I asked.

Also, thanks for the physical info... My PCP was $135 for the physical, since I need a FAA physical anyway I am getting both done for $75 (they are basically the same).

Is anyone else worried about getting all of this done by the 18th? The child abuse clearance, can that be done online? I will be asking my Dad to watch the kids so I can go to the clinics that are listed for the physical and immunizations. Just out of curiosity how many uniforms is everyone ordering?

Hi Leslijoy! The child abuse clearance cannont be done online get it sent asap because it takes about 3 weeks to get it back. I am only ordering 1 uniform right now because of all the other things we need. I may order more uniforms after class starts if we need them. (I am assuming we only need the uniform for clinicals I could be wrong if we have to wear uniforms all the time I definitely need to order more!)

Thanks I will get it sent out Mon. Another question where can I find info on this Healthcare provider CPR class we need to take. I'll drive anywhere to take I just need to take it. LOL. I think I am only going to order on set of uniforms as well, to much money to quickly. I will get the book list and order my books from Half.com (a branch of ebay) You type in the ISBN number and they list books from new never used to very used. This is how I got my book when I was at WVU saved me 100's of dollars a semester.

Does anyone know if this would be accepted?

I don't know about online certification, but check with your local EMS most offer classes I am going to take my class this tuesday at 5:00 pm at elizabeth township ems. If you don't find anywhere else to go and are willing to drive here you can call them at this number 412-751-0919 to register..........

use this site http://www.bookdealfinder.com/

it will show all the possibilities and in some cases Half.com is not the cheapest.

If you want to sell your books there is a similar search engine that will bring up the highest price you will get. http://bookscouter.com/

I would recommend before going all out on new books check and see what the going rate is on used one's, if the price is dropping or no one is interested that generally means a new edition is on the horizon. You may not want to invest in something that is going to be outdated.

I never thought about uniforms in lab... That is a good point Betty... I've seen the people in clinicals wearing scrubs, but that isn't until the last 5 or 6 weeks of the semester. The only comment that was mentioned about the uniforms is the embroidery, I was told that alone can take a few weeks to get done if not done with the masses. I was thinking of getting the extra tops since that is the embroidered part, pants we should be able to color match if need be to get them like at the tangier outlets.

Hi I just wanted to say hi! I am in the Cal day program as well and I am soo excited! I can't wait to start classes and meet all of you I feel so stressed about getting everything in on time! All of your information has been soo helpful thank youu!
