Careers outside the hospital?

Published

Hi, I have recently come across some information on becoming a nurse health coach. I feel like most of my patients I have, encounter complications from completely preventable things if they knew how to properly manage their health. Because of this, I find health coaching very intriguing and I am tying to reach out and find out some more information on it. Does anyone have experience with this?

I've also heard of nurses getting into the Botox business or iv therapy. Has anyone tried any of these things? What are some things you’ve heard as alternatives to working the hospital? Thanks!

Have you thought of occupational health out in a company, factory or organisation?

Occy health can be very stimulating if you choose the right setting. I did it for 5 years in an international inter-governmental organisation. As well as standard OH we were trained in ergonomics and did ergonomic advice, workstation assessements etc. We also allowed the staff to use us for their outside prescriptions for dressings, blood tests etc. which made it more general. With people going all over the world on mission there was the travel advice, vaccinations etc. We also got involved in the invalidity commisions when people were on long term sick. I most loved the fact that in this organisation we dealt with staff from all corners of the globe.

Health promotion was a huge part of our rôle. In the time I was there we did awareness and screening campaigns for breast cancer, bowel cancer, skin cancer, blood borne viruses, repetitive strain injury and alcohol abuse.

It was a nice breather from hospital work, not to mention the Monday to Friday "normal" working week, home every evening.

I personally worked Medsurg for 2 years and ICU 6 years. I really loved ICU but had to take a break from bedside care ( burnout...LOL). I searched online for non-bedside care jobs and found jobs in Pharmaceutical companies. Now I work as a healthcare communicator/product specialist. It's all on the phone and due to COVID I work from which I really like. These companies hire nurses and pharmacists.

It was a big transition though, having worked in the Hospital, I was used to being on my feet, running on adrenaline..LOL and always busy.

With this new job I felt bored at first but now I am loving it. :-)

I enjoy Occ Health. I've also worked in Corrections, which is never a dull moment. You can do clinics and surgery center nursing as well.

Can you give more information on how to look into this? I would like something outside the hospital setting and need a change. Any information is appreciated.
