Hi 5cats,

Thank you very much.

THE ANSWER IS: THEY HAVE NO CLUE!!!

They are just experimenting something! I dont know really what it is! They should understand that we are not stupid and any further assessment besides the CRNBC exam can be done once the nurse has got a job and is allocated to a position in BC. Then if he/she has to do any extra up-to-date course then that should happened via our employer or once we are settled and working in the country! We have already a nursing qualification for God Sake! Do not think we are stupid! This is just an extra cost having to go to Vancouver and stay there for 2 days! At least they could sponsor us and paid for it! :banghead:

Please bear in mind that the SEC was put in place because IEN's were entering the work force after passing the CRNE and obtaining a nursing license but a large number were not successful in the workplace.

Quite frankly, post employment is the wrong time to be determining if a nurse is placing the Canadian public at risk and since nursing jobs are protected by unions it is extremely difficult to let a nurse go so employers want to make sure they are getting what they are paying for and they are paying very well.

We have already a nursing qualification for God Sake!
Please review the nursing competencies for Canada. They clearly state that a nurse must have a clear understanding of the Canadian health care system and how it works.

This is difficult if you obtained your nursing credentials in another country.

Health care is contextual not only to the social values of the society but also to the laws and regulations of the country. There are many laws and regulations that affect nursing here including laws about consent, involuntary admission for psych, health and safety regulations and many others. Ethical rules and regulations also are contextual and what might be considered morally right in another country might not be considered to be "right" here in Canada.

Many internationally educated nurses come to Canada and are successful in the workplace after extended orientation.

If it is done properly it works well, if it is not done properly it can be a big mess. Not only do the unions and regulatory authorities get involved but patients, families , the IEN, their family, unit staff, managers and a host of other people can be adversely affected.

The SEC is in place in some provinces and it is not used everywhere.

The reason it is in place is because of the strong public accountability framework that is in place in the health care system.

All that being said I must admit we have no idea if the SEC actually works to determine competency. In others word to my knowledge there is no research to suggest that it is valid and reliable.

I am embarrassed to admit that, but it seems like the best alternative to no assessment at all.

hi every body

is ielts should be valid when i get my SEC assessment ? and if so whats the expiry date cause am going to do the assessment at a university and its valid for 2 years then while for crnbc is for one yea . whats more when i received my letter from CRNBC it says am eligible to do the SEC

Your IELTS results are only valid for two years from the date of passing the testing. And yes, it must be current when you do your SEC. CRNBC isn't telling you you're eligible, they're telling you that you're REQUIRED to do the SEC. The purpose of it is to provide more information about what you know and how you work, your skill levels and your competence to practice in a Canadian nursing environment. It's not a pass/fail arrangement; if there are areas where you don't meet standards, you will be required to upgrade your education (including clinical experience) through a Canadian university or college, at your own expense, before you'll be eligible to write the CRNE. And only after you've successfully written the CRNE will you be able to register as a nurse in Canada and work in the nursing field.

I agree with RN Canada that post-employment is NOT the time to learn that a new employee is not capable of performing to the level required. Orientation of new staff is one of the largest expenses incurred on some units and can run into the $50,000 range PER nurse. That money would be thrown away on someone who will never be able to do the job no matter how much time they are given. It's much better to hire someone who will fit the unit's needs and provide value for the money...

Thanx for ur replay , so it means no need to do the ielts if its less than 2 years for the SEC sorry to ask again but i want to make sure

If you have taken IELTS and received an acceptable score within 2 years of the date you are scheduled for SEC then you'll be okay. BUT in order to be eligible for registry in most provinces, your IELTS has to be current (within the previous 2 years) at the time you apply for registration. So you might want to figure out how long your score will remain valid and how long it will take to meet all the requirements for registration and not just hope that you'll get it all done before your IELTS expires.

Hi, talk to your college, if you were required to take a bridging course that could be use as "proof of fluency" too.

I just noticed that this thread is in the Canadian forum and properly belongs in the International forum. This is a topic that only a small number of Canadian nurses have any knowledge of and is more related to IENs and the whole immigration/registration ball of wax. So it's going over there now.

Addendum: Yasaman, please read the copious amounts of information already posted on this subject. All of your questions will be answered.
