Jilly, I would love to give you some input. What are your questions? Just for starters, don't get frustrated when you venture out. You will find some negative and positive aspects of Nursing but remember that Nursing needs people who are open minded, flexible, and focus on the needs of the patient. Think, prioritize and never rush. The key to patient safety is basic nursing and true heart felt caring, always ask for help when your not sure, never ever, ever be intimidated or afraid to ask for help. Some wonderful nurse will always take you under her wing.

You'll find people willing to participate but what do you want them to do? Contact you via email? Respond to a set of questions you post on the board? Let the board know how we can best help you.

Thank you very much for replying to my posting! I just would like to know basically what you would consider to be the essential qualities which a nurse should have. It's really easy, so take your time and I am looking forward to hearing back from you! Thank you so much!

Intelligence,compassion,patience,the ability to really listen to what others say,a nonjudgemental attitude,the ability to accomplish multiple tasks in a very short time,a sense of humor,the ability to stay calm under pressure.

I am an RN for 26 years...have worked in many jobs but mostly OBGYN. I have worked in a hospital for most of that time but now work for an infertilty specialist and love it. Id be happy to help you .

This list is not original with me but I have had it along time. I have been in nursing 40+ years and I find it works for me. These are the qualities that helped thru the years.

1. Always seek more knowledge for what you don't know may hurt somesone.

2. Before you say anything to anyone, ask yourself three things: 1) is it true? 2) Is it kind?, 3) is it necessary?

3. Never miss the opportunity to compliment or to say something encouraging to someone.

4. Refuse to talk negatively about others; don't gossip and don't listen to gossip.

5. Have a forgiving view of people. Believe that most people are doing the best they can.

6. Keep an open mind; discuss, but don't argue. It is possible to disagree without being disagreeable.)

7. Forget about counting to l0. Count to 1000 before doing or saying anything that could make matters worse.

8.Let your virtues speak for themselves.

9. If someone criticizes you, see if there is any truth to what is being said; if so make changes. If there is no truth to the criticism, ignore it, and live so that no one will believe the negative remark.

10. Cultivate your sense of humor; laughter is the shortest distance between two people.

11. Make promises sparingly and keep them faithfully.
