I'm graduating this May and I was told by a couple of RN's that salaries are not negotiable with public hospitals. You see, I'm on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and we only have one or two really good hospitals. These hospitals don't pay that great but I need to work there to get good experience. The starting salary is $20.00 an hour for a BSN and $19.50 an hour for an ADN.
Since I am a Male, I'm looking for a Job around $25.00 an hour or around $50,000 a year. Do you guys think this is possible? Can a new grad negotiate their salary?
I guess since I am a single female, I have to ask for at least 75,000 a year. After all, I have to support myself without a man around. The rentaboys that I get to open jars for me and take out the garbage are wanting a raise.

LOL! Exactly right! And, of course, we all know there are no single women supporting families, right? All us girls are just working for "mad money" ...

As you have read, I live in the South. Men get paid more down here! That is a fact! Have ya'll not studied the "glass ceiling" in scoiology?
Don't ya'll work with other male nurses? I have even been told by several nursing managers, talked to other male nurses about it, and my college professors of this phenomenon, and I have no reason to doubt them. In fact, my first day of Health Management, the FEMALE professor made all the men stand up and pointed out to the entire class of women that we will be making more than $10,000 a year when we graduate than our female new graduates.
For example, I have been working as a CNA in the largest ER on the Coast for 2 years and make around $13.00 an hour while my female co-workers who have worked at the same hospital LONGER make far less in a 40 hour work week!
So back to my point, by my thinking, a 4 year Nursing degree with high honors and more responsibility should be worth way more than just a measely $7.00 an hour ($20.00)??? So I hpe that there is room for negotiating..

I have 9 credits in Sociology and have never heard of this supposed "glass ceiling." I am not an RN just yet, but I can be certain that such a sexist attitude will not work to anyone's advantage.

There are many nurses (female) out there that will run circles around you.
I know about the whole glass ceiling thing, and I really don't think it applies to the nursing profession. Unless you've got major experience or something a hospital really needs, you being a male will not get you five more dollars than a female just as qualified as you are.
Maybe if you were working in administration, it MIGHT give you a leg up, but seeing that nursing is mostly a female occupation, you won't get any further just being a guy. You being male does not make you a better nurse.

this is an important topic. Men generally ARE taught to be better at negotiating. I would think that the further we move along on the equality issue the better women will get at negotiating.
Aside from gender inequality, I was at an interview today where I negotiated my starting pay upward and the director asked me not to discuss pay with any other nurses. (Duh). She relayed a story that revealed to me that some of her long-term much more experienced nurses are not making as much as some recent hires including myself. (I did not accept the job). What a dog-eat-dog world! Will I end up being a pro-union RN?
