My South Carolina RN license is in inactive status since 4/2014 as I didn't have work authorization to renew it. I recently finished a CNA course ( state certification testing pending) because I wanted to work at least as a CNA and get healthcare experience. I have never worked as an RN. Now I have work authorization ( we have been granted green card after 11 years in the US :) ) and looking to apply for PCT /CNA jobs. I'm kind of lost, do I mention that I'm an RN ( inactive license) in my cover letter/ resume? In my opinion I should mention.
But when I mention they would not even look at my resume after that.
My other concern is am I allowed to work as a PCT/ CNA even if my RN License is inactive?
I don't plan on re-activating it until I find a CNA/ PCT job and have worked in that job for at least 1 year.
I tried to find it in SC board of nursing web site but I can't find anything regarding that. I have been trying to contact the board but they are closed since before Christmas. I know I should have contacted them before the CNA course. But I'm glad I took it because it was kind of like a little refresher course for nursing fundamentals.
what do you guys know/think? Thank you in advance :)
Update: According to her I need to have an active RN license if I want to practice as a CNA. I can't be a CNA if I have an inactive RN license.
Wait wait, did she say why?
Aren't the responsibilities of a CNA and RN different? Basically different jobs? From what I've seen anyway.. I'm confused.
well she said when I do the CNA certification the registry will show that I'm an RN with inactive license. Or she said I need to have taken my nursing fundamentals within 2 years in order to get certification. I know..... I was surprised too. She said SC don't have a restriction saying that you can't work as a CNA if you have RN. and she said most don't work as CNA they all work as RNs. I know it's confusing to me too. So I thought I'm gonna get my RN reactivated and find a nursing job, although it's gonna be a long road.
You can't be placed on the CNA registry for department of aging without a work visa number or Social Security number.
Thats a federal requirement under the Omnibus budget reconciliation act of 1987 (OBRA)
if you're not listed on your states registry you're not hireable
There is no way to sidestep that
This is offensive and ill-informed. I've had a green card for 13 years and I'm not a citizen yet. It is not required to be one, and after all, it was the US Government that wanted me to come here as there was a nursing shortage at the time. I'm not saying I won't be a citizen, but perhaps if you'd like to pay for the process I might be able to be one a little quicker.I've paid taxes in this country and I abide by the law so I am a valued member of American society, citizen or not. Good grief.
... all that and you are a nurse?
I bet you have great bedside.
As Jackie would say, "You want it? You gotta work for it!"
I find you to be condescending and very immature for an adult.
You're pandering for likes?
I pander to one and one only, God!
He can sort out the stupidity!
I have a job to do and that is what I will do.
Not pander to non peers, let alone peers.
There are processes in this life and world. You seem like the type that bonds to anything that satisfies your need for gratification.
I on the other had keep it real. Perhaps instead of pointing you crooked finger, point inward.

I don't know what part of SC you live in but Greenville Tech Buck Mickel center has a BON approved refresher course. They also accept the South Dakota State University nursing/continuing ed program. Not sure how that works. I have a couple of friends who went trough the G'ville tech program. It's a good one.
If you live n the upstate, a couple of hospitals will hire you as a new grad after the refresher course. I wish you the best of luck on your endeavor.

Whoa, gear down there. You need to chill out a bit.
