Can I still become a nurse with a disease

Published

Hello,

I am a student with hopes of becoming a nurse. I recently found out that I have Celiac Disease which is a immune defficiency. I can not eat wheats nor gluten foods. I am perfectly healthy other than this. Would they deny my application to nursing school because of this?

Thank you in advance!

Hi!

Please do not view me as being insensitive, but.....

Not sure why it would?

If they don't ask, why would you tell?

Does the Celiac disease drastically alter your Activities of Daily Living? Can you do just about anything EXCEPT eat anything and everything?

Good luck to you!

Hey thank you for your response actually it shows up in my blood so a blood test is required in order to get accepted, that's why I was wondering I don't see why I wouldnt either but u never know

I seriously doubt you'll have a problem. Celiac disease is relatively common and it seems like a lot of people are going gluten-free even if they don't "have" to. Besides, if every nurse was required to be perfectly healthy, there'd be no one to take care of the patients!

I'm not an expert on celiac disease but as far as I know ppl with celiac disease cannot eat/digest gluten. I don't see why it would impair your ability to pursue a nursing career.

Besides it isn't asked on the application whether you have it or not so why would it matter.

Good luck:)

Thanks you guys I didn't think it would hurt my future either. Thanks again guys!

Celiac disease is not an immune deficiency. This will not hurt your nursing career in any way. I work with a nurse who has celiac and I would have never known except for her declining to participate in out pizza ordering.

Celiac disease is not an immune deficiency.

If anything, I would say it is a disease of overactive immune reaction.

Like others have said, no need to worry about it. Good luck with nursing school!

Shouldn't cause an issue. I graduated with someone who had celiac. She just always had her own lunch/snacks.

Moved to pre-nursing....

Celiac sprue is not part of what they screen for when blood work is done. So you are good.

There's definitely no reason why they'd deny you admission with that medical condition. It's tolerable and treatable and shouldn't affect your work or school life.
