Can I still apply with a very low GPA?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am very stressed out right now and feel kinda lost. I want to apply to nursing program in one of the community colleges here in Los Angeles but I see that one of their requirements is to have a minimum gpa of 2.5 in your science classes (Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology). Unfortunately, my gpa in these classes is less than 2.5. I have Cs in my combined A&P (I,II) and a B in micro. I can't retake anymore classes because I already took my A&P (I) twice and most schools only want you to repeat 1 class. I have completed all the pre-reqs for nursing (out of state) and my gpa is not that bad (3.1) but I know that this isn't very competitive compared to other applicants.

I also know that I can start from the bottom...CNA>LVN>RN but this will require more time and money so I'm not really sure if I want to take this path.

Is this the end of the road for me? (Going straight to ADN program)

Go for it & apply !!!!!! Keep the faith

You may need to adjust your plans..

Granted, I don't know what school you are going into, and what area, so what I say is truly relative.

You may be able to get into a LPN program; then bridge over; or depending on the school, do well on the standardized test the proctor, and then they will look at the whole picture, rather than just the grades; it will be depend on the school.

When in doubt, see if you can get an interview with the advisors at the school and find out their process and their requirements.

You never know; you may get in; if not, there are other pathways to be an RN; becoming a LPN is one way many take and go on to becoming an RN.

Best wishes!

I feel like I have no chance at my nursing program but I will apply anyways. But my school wont allow you to retake but it offers medical and general microbiology. I took general last semester and got a B. I was going to take medical and try for an A but couldnt find adequate childcare. Anyways, my point is although I can't repeat my school will accept general or medical micro. Is your school the same? I hope you get in on the firsr try though. Good luck!

Apply anyway. You have nothing to lose. I got into nursing school with a core GPA of a 3.1. Keep trying!!

Apply where you can get past the cut off. If that wont pan out i would do the LVN route. Just dont pay for those private rip off schools.

If you don't meet the minimum requirement your application won't be considered.

You can either try to find a different program with less stringent requirements or take or retake classes to improve your GPA so you're competetive.

Aren't community college programs in CA based on a lottery system? Every program I've seen is set up that way.

Look for programs that are- as long as you meet the minimum requirements, you're in a pool with every other applicant, with the exact same chance of getting in. Apply to several programs, since most seem to get about 10x more applicants than they have slots for students. Anywhere you'd consider attending, apply!

But yes, you do have to meet the minimum requirements. Find out what the repeat policy is at some different schools. I had to search around myself, because I was young and dumb at one time, and I had to repeat anatomy and physiology. I'm about to graduate from a BSN program.

Where there's a will, there's a way. Do your research, and see what you come up with.

Good luck!

I'm currently in nursing school in the LACC district. Unfortunately if you don't meet the requirements, you will not be considered. I am sorry. You can always try west coast university or national university. They only require that you pass a pre entrance exam and are able to secure the loan.

Apply. Then apply again. Then apply again. And remember grades MATTER. If you get in you may need to analyze your study habits. If you say "I just don't get it" or "I am" then you are doomed. Study harder. Study more. Try different methods. Don't use excuses. If you get a bad grade don't blame the instructor or school. You will have bosses you don't always like..you still have to survive and make it. Use these prior challenges as a learning experience. Now you know bad grades matter.

That's why I feel so lost right now. And I'm not sure if I would want to go to a private school.

I would apply, unfortunately, I didn't meet the minimum requirements. I don't think they would even look at it.
