Can anyone tell me what the criteria is for tranferring from post-op?

Published

I just did an OR assignment and have to write a paper...Can anyone tell me what the criteria is for tranferring from post-op? I asked the nurses there and they pretty much just said vitals WNL. I have all of the paper done except for this part and I can not find this information any where. I need specifics, like RR must be >12 for example.

(Please note this is not transfer from PACU, but from the OR floor.)

Thanks!

Do you mean from the OR to PACU?

Or do you mean from a day stay surgical unit?

Or discharge from the med/surg floor if the surgery required an overnight stay?

Yes, we need clarification on when this transfer is occurring in order to help.

If you mean OR to PACU, it's awake enough to maintain airway and breathing. Out of the OR, give report, PACU takes over.

If you mean PACU to post-op unit, either to stay inpatient or for discharge home, awake, alert, vitals WNL, pain under control, etc. Some PACUs may use the Aldrete score to determine readiness to leave the surgical department.

The surgical department typically consists of pre-op, intra-op (OR), and post-op (PACU and same-day surgery discharge unit). Because the surgical department is many units combined, that's why we need you to clarify which area you're referring to.
