Calling any Watts School of Nursing Students!!!

Published

Hi all,

I have posted a few times about my worries on getting into a nursing program and just wanted to share that I got accepted to Watts School of Nursing in Durham. I am so excited and I was wondering if any Watts students (or from other programs) had any advice on how they have gone about financing their education. I never had to deal with financial aid when I got my undergrad a few years ago and Watts is pretty pricey, (about $30,000). I plan to do the tuition reimbursement program with Duke when I graduate but I'm worried about what to do right now. Any advice on financial aid or private loan experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!:heartbeat

Lilloman-I called Watts and she said that we are starting in June, June 2nd. Im guessing we will just be in separate class rooms? She said you guys were starting your nursing classes in July.

handerson88 - it was so nice meeting you today, its nice to know of someone you've met face to face going into this b/c i don't know about you but i'm pretty nervous. we'll have to exchange emails and phone #'s. have a great wknd

I know, i've been freaking out alone for a while haha. It was definitely nice to meet you face to face.

Just wondering what everyone's suggestions are for the best references - teachers, people you've worked for, or does it matter?

So far I have two teachers references.

Thanks:D

Does anyone know what the supplies list might be for the prereqs? just wondering what I will need........and to RNRGRL the teachers are great references...I used a bsn rn, a teacher and my church cousler, sounds like you are off to a great start. good luck girl;)

Thanks Reesee :D - I've been so nervous on whether or not i'm going to make the last "cut" to get in!!! Are you taking all online pre-reqs.? I've taken some online courses at Wake Tech and the only advice I can give is make sure you and your notebooks are completely organized, it def. helps alot. Good luck and take care :-)

No, I am taking all pre reqs at watts. Thanks I will definitly be organized!

Speaking as a Duke RN, the Watts students are some of the most professional and well-prepared students I've seen on our floor (and the ones I've been around are mostly in one of their first clinicals).

Had I been younger, I would have loved to have gone to Watts; I want a DNP, however, and at 33 I'm sort of running out of time (I also don't have kids yet, so there's more than one clock ticking here for me. . .) :) I'm a firm believer in the hospital programs (Norfolk General trained my mother back in the fifties). I did Duke's ABSN and am happy with the result, but I think the experience you'll get is immeasurable.

Good luck - and enjoy being students!

Well I just dropped off my application packet, now the waiting game begins. I'm sooo nervous... ahhhhhhh! LOL :-)

Does anyone know about how long before I can expect an answer?

Good luck Rnrgrl...hopefully you won't have to wait too long for your good news.

I'm still studying for the exam- I got the vocabulary down but the math is making me nervous, it's like I've forgotten so much! I've never been good at math anyway. :(

dreamon - I just took the test in March, passed the first time, studied for two weeks before I took it. The test itself is not hard its the time that gets you. I did not finish the test but apparently still did ok. Just study your math real good (its basic arithmatic) and you'll do fine. Good Luck :-)

For Reesee- there isn't a set supply list. You just need a couple of notebook, a binder or two (whatever organization method that works best for you) and pens/pencils. It's very standard!

rnrgrl- it takes about 2 weeks to get your criminal background. If it's any longer, then definitely call **** about it- chances are it got lost in the mail (that happened with my husband who just got his background check!)

After that, it takes up to 3 weeks. If you pass the background check, then you're in!! Good luck!

Dreamon- Math shouldn't be too hard, it's basic arithmatic. Reading is usually what people have the hardest time with because it's so many questions in such a short amount of time. The trick is to not stress b/c the test is designed for you to not finish all of them. Just do as many as you can accurately, so if you find a problem that's difficult, just skip it! That should help with math too.

Hope that helps some! Good luck guys!
