Hi all,
I have posted a few times about my worries on getting into a nursing program and just wanted to share that I got accepted to Watts School of Nursing in Durham. I am so excited and I was wondering if any Watts students (or from other programs) had any advice on how they have gone about financing their education. I never had to deal with financial aid when I got my undergrad a few years ago and Watts is pretty pricey, (about $30,000). I plan to do the tuition reimbursement program with Duke when I graduate but I'm worried about what to do right now. Any advice on financial aid or private loan experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!:heartbeat
sorry, I'm new and found this thread.does anyone know what kinds of math are on the test? I've read several different things pertaining to the test, bought the book and such. Have read that there are no algebra questions but was wondering about geometry and such. is it just basic percentage, fraction, division, etc?
this sounds like a really great program as long as it can be afforded and such. I've heard really great things and would normally ask the school itself, but the only person I've been able to reach is the receptionist lady, who doesn't seem to know what's going on..
Hey guys!
I went in this week for my Watts counseling and will be starting my pre-reqs in June. I just saw that were a couple other members on this thread who either just started at Watts or who look like they might be in my cohort. I'm see we'll see each other soon, but I wanted to say hello, and best of luck in all your pre-reqs!
Hi all,
I've come to the realization that it's not going to work out with me working full time at my current job and attending school. I'm now looking into going to look into Watts. I've taken a lot of the pre-requisites already but understand they may not transfer. My plan was to go to Alamance Community College Evening program but they only allow new students every 3 years. I don't have enough ranking points to get in this year and because I'm already 36 I don't want to wait another 3 years before beginning school.
I'm wanting to hear from those who are working and going to school and just going to school. I'm curious as to what the schedule it like. I don't know exactly how I'm going to swing things. I still have a mortgage and bills. Though, I know it will be worth it in the long run and I'm passionate about being a nurse. Do you take classes in the evening and daytime at the same time? I'm clueless about this so any info you can give will be appreciated.
Also, are there others starting Watts in my age group?
Thanks!
Carolina Girl,
The Watts pre-req's are designed to accommodate the working person. Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-10 and for the most part homework is at a manageable level.
Starting with the nurse program it becomes more demanding. As a general rule expect to be at school/clinical at a minimum 8-4 Mon-Thu, with some Fridays thrown in and sometimes you need to BE AT clinical before 0700. You also need to allow time for outside classroom requirements such as homework, reading, test prep, skills practice, and group projects, and possibly study groups. Without doubt it's a full-time job of its own.
I'm working full-time during pre-req's, will go to part-time in 1st semester and will become 100% full-time student by 2nd semester (not counting any NA work I do after my Externship between 2nd and 3rd semesters).
As for age...you don't mention your age or have it listed in your profile, so no clue on that.

So everything is going well. Got my financial package/aid letter? Im new at this stuff. I was nervous about not having enough money for school since I wont be working even my little pt job beginning June when my classes start but I know God will provide. He didn't bring me this far not to complete this! Thanks Reecee again for explaining stuff I didn't get and your support since I called you totally confused, lol. Im really excited and looking forward to June. And Reecee what ARE you wearing our first day? lol
Hi Carolina Girl,
Lilloman and I are in the same cohort so I just started my prereqs with Watts as well. There is a large range of ages in my classes and it's relaly exciting to have that. I am 26 and I will not be working while going to school. I will be using loans to survive. I know that I could get burnt our really easily if I had to do both. Some people do but I really want to be able to focus and do as well as I can. Have you taken the PSB entrance exam yet?
Hey Lilloman,
Can you recommend any student loans? Im looking for non credit based. We were one of the ones who lost our home from my husbands job loss in Ohio. Im also going to use one of the lenders on the list MOC sent me. So you are working or doing an externship while going to Watts?
Lovee
I'm not going to be much help to you there. This is the first time I've ever had student loans so I just did what my wife (who has student loans) and the financial aid person at MOC told me to do.
I did go through cfnc.org to get the actual loans.
I really can't tell you what I have for loans - LOL.
Sorry.
I'm currently working full-time (IT) while I'm in pre-req's. Plan to go to part-time when 1st semester commences, but by 2nd semester I know I'll need to be 100% focused and committed to the school work to be the student and nurse I desire to be.
I have a 'contract' with my wife. I put her through school and she is going to do the same for me.
