Calling all crusty old bats ‘?

Updated:   Published

I started with this forum a long time ago and was offered the distinction of being known as Crusty Old Bat. I wonder how many of the old school are still here. Can we have a roll call?

I love to see ownership of derogatory remarks.

I'm 65 and been a nurse for over 30 years.  I'm not a crusty old bat.  I think our generation moreso than just about any other generation has embraced extreme changes and technology and become proficient, the inventors and teachers of it all.

There's not much I miss about "old school nursing" actually.  My favorite is not having bottles of medicine and medicine carts.  But being able to scan patients and medications you get out of a machine from their profile is so much better.

Been here since 2002.

Remember the great "Obesity Thread" when someone mentioned they noticed a lot of overweight nurses and aren't we supposed to be health care providers and role models?  It went down hill from there.

Then there was the circumcision thread.  It was fascinating the women that were obsessed with their child's penis and their choices and extremely strong opinions about it.

Back then there were many strong opinions about ADN vs. BSN and that we take the same boards and BSN's were useless and not really good nurses.

The best one was a "let's support Tweety thread" when I was going through a divorce (may he rest in peace) and got a lot of love.

I had a now long lost "The Vegetarian Thread" and of course an omnivore had to come and offer anti-veg opinions.

There was some shakeup by the mods early on that caused dozens of members to leave.  I can't remember what they were mad at.

The "Daily Thread" has bene going on for many years now without stop.

I love and political forums and come and go there but often have to take a break because people annoy me.  The worst was when I got a message "The Africans in this forum don't appreciate what you just said.."  I presumed African Americans and don't remember what I said but it was when I was a moderator/admin and was one of the reasons I resigned from that role.  LOL

I've made some decisions based on advice here.  I decided to go RN to BSN because of discussions here and even picked the school based on posts here.

I signed up 2 years after you. And remember all of these.

I actually remember two mass withdrawals. There was the tragedy when the site owner died. The people that took control of AN content were pretty firm about blocking discussion of the incident on the site. The drama went offline eventually, but a lot of folks probably just opted out while it was still here.

Then there was the lawsuit from a for-profit online college that grew out of a discussion here. Lots of folks trying to CYA for a while.

I remember most of those threads, too. And I still haunt the political threads. I take breaks as well, especially when the trolls come out.

I just enjoy the way nurses think. Especially the old ones.

Where's Ruby Vee when we need her?

Ruby Vee is pushing 70 and officially retired (again).  I don't check in much, but it's October . . . Domestic Violence awareness month.

I remember an exodus — I don't know how "mass" it was — when a popular poster was banned from the site.  I don't remember why she was banned, just that she was and she was one of the main reasons I enjoyed the site.

I remember the poster who was certain everyone was picking on her because she was beautiful . . . and the ones about how all the old nurses should just "retire and get out of my way.”

The mean old biter nurse thread was a classic, and I remember it well.

I'll admit to being a Crusty Old Bat, and have been since the term was officially coined and became the "C.O.B. Society.”

I joined in 2007 but like a cicada, I would periodically dissappear and re-emerge every few years.

It used to be much more active years ago, and a lot of fun. Wasn't the break room one big combined section back then? I liked that better.

I remember the Pearson view trick was a huge topic with new grads, and they freaked out from having to wait a whole 3 days to see if they passed. We did 2 full days of scantron testing, and waited 3 months for results.

I could object over being called a COB, but after retiring after completing 40 years, I think that I'll just be quiet.
