California's 2010 New Grad RN Program

Published

2010 is fast approaching so I think there must be a new thread for 2010 new grad program. I hope the moderators will allow me to post this new thread. I'm currently working at Monrovia Memorial Hospital which is 40 miles away from our apt. We live here in Playa del Rey, near the LAX and unfortunately I don't drive yet. I'm looking for any hospitals that offers new grad program for next year. I'm not even sure if I'm still qualified for a new grad program because it will be my 8th month this Jan. working at Monrovia Memorial. Anyone could share any info..Thanks..

Anyone else going to the Hoag New Grad info session tomorrow? Orange County is a far drive for me but I'm hoping that it'll be of some benefit..

Did they notify you about this new grad info session or was it on their website (if i was, i didn't see it). regardless, can you report back as to what they talked about for those of us out of the area? Thanks!

It was on their website sometime in February. They took the registration page down after all the spots got filled. I'll let y'all know if I hear anything regarding their New Grad program.. :)

Children's Hospital Los Angeles just opened up their application for the November 2010 cohort. The application closes on April 9th at 1700!

So nothing too exciting at the Hoag info session. I got there late so I was only able to pass out my resume to the units I was interested in and spoke to a couple of nurse managers.

Note to self: Glendale to Newport Beach is very very far and apparently requires more than 3 hrs travel time when driving in the afternoon.

I attended last spring and got an interview out of the process. Did not get hired (competition was intense) but got a call back 1year later asking if i was still interested. I turned them down due to current job.

did anyone else get this letter from cedars-sinai?

"You were selected to participate in the first phase of the interview process. Since you are out of the Los Angeles and Orange County area, a phone interview will be conducted. To be able to reserve a phone interview appointment, you must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.5."

:doh:the 3.5 requirement did it for me. close but no cigar. till next time. i'm still trying to figure out what they mean by because i don't live in LA area I would need a 3.5 to even come meet them?. Does that mean LA applicants do not need a 3.5?

im sad..

I got the the email from them as well. pretty sure it just means that they will only consider people with GPA's above 3.5 regardless of location.

I don't understand why some hospitals are so anal about this whole GPA situation. I mean, I know so many of my friends who have horrible test taking skills but their hands on/clinical skills are way better than some experienced RNs we've ever worked with. And I know some classmates who constantly get As in exams and can't even give a tube feeding without a panic attack first. It's ridiculous. :grn:

(Note: I'm playing devil's advocate here.) It's an easy way to start weeding people out. When you have 15 spots open and 2000 applicants, you have to start somewhere. They're trying to weed down to the top 1% of applicants (which, sadly, is a higher statistic than some of the residencies right now are accepting...) Why would they interview those with relatively lower GPAs when there are bound to be applicants with high GPAs AND amazing interpersonal skills AND solid clinical knowledge AND a preceptorship in the area of interest AND good letters of recommendation AND BSN/ACLS/PALS AND a masters in public health...

Sadly, when the competition is THIS stiff, every little thing is an automatic disqualification. It's rough.

^^ sadly, this is 100% correct. was just gonna say the same thing..ugh.

Yeah, I'm aware of all that. I guess I'm just frustrated not necessarily for me, but for some of my very good friends who can't find a job but have 3.0 GPA, amazing letter of recs, have their BLS and ACLS, etc. Guess it doesn't help we graduated with an ADN! CHLA just sent me an email saying "sorry, youre **** outta luck. BSNs only."
