Anyone planning on applying to the Spring 2011, CSUSM, accelerated ABSN program? Just wondering if there is anyone else out there:)
My advisor said they were admitting 44 students at the San Marcos location for Fall 2010. I have one class left, Microbiology, that I am doing in the summer and will be done in July. I am hoping they will accept this IP class and get to start in August. I heard from a few people that they do accept you if you were finished with your classes and had the 2.5 overall GPA and 2.7 core and 71% on TEAS. I haven't heard that they have turned people away with this status but things might be changing as these programs become more impacted. There are a lot of programs out there now though, so there are other options, I just have my heart set on CSUSM. I don't think any of us will know acceptance status till late June, early July if I were to guess.
One of my classes have expired so I just signed up for a summer class. In the past, they did accept people with classes in progress. My advisor said this time they have a lot of qualified students so people with summer classes will only be admitted if spaces open up. I was very disappointed because I busted my butt to get into a summer class so I could be eligible. It did not really seem promising to me.
oh, that does not sound good. I know what you mean, it is so hard to get classes, especially a science in the summer. And I am sure as you know, those of us with prior degrees are the last of the last to register. I had to jump through hoops to get my Micro class at a community college. It is disappointing because if they stated IP classes were ok, then I would hope they would accept us as qualified (that is if we are going to be done a couple months after Spring). What is two months? It isn't that much different (not like if it was a fall to spring difference). Worse case, i guess we would start in Jan. 2011. The only thing I am worried about is more and more applicants making it more competitive to get in. All my sciences are A's, but my GPA in my prior BA wasn't impressive. Guess only time will tell.
Sarah-V,
I am in the same boat. My science grades are good but my BA grades are not great. I am hoping that most people that applied here also applied to SDSU's new ABSN program so maybe that will open up some spots.
I seriously spent 2 weeks going into the community college trying to register for the summer science class. So to hear that news, I felt like all my hard work was wasted. I too have the same worry that if this semesters applicants are qualified then the next semester will have even more qualified students. I wish you luck and I am keeping my fingers crossed that we will both get in!
murrietamom4- I am sorry u are in the same boat as me, but it is nice to know I am not alone! I have been working so hard too, i took A & P 1 and 2, organic chem, biomedical stats, intro to stats, and Dev. Psy. Last fall and this semester. It was crazy hard work but I pulled all A's just to counter the poor GPA i got from SDSU (it was in interior design). You and I have been working with CSUSM for a while now and it is a shame that new applicants are coming in at this point, but honestly, I think they know we have been working with them hand in hand and that is in our favor. What advisor do you have? Mine seems to be giving me more promising information (that people in our situation should be ok).
has anyone spoken to the absn counselors lately?
they have some sort of new system as to how they'll be admitting students. something about accepting on a rolling basis and accepting the top 25% of applicants every month. they'll be posting this new information on their website in a few weeks, i was told. it's still a little confusing to me, does anyone else have information about this?
i was told at an information meeting a few months ago that as long as you meet the minimum req's, you'd be admitted in the order you applied .. but i guess it's different now?
this is starting to make me panic! yikes!
Hmm, that sounds really confusing! The last time I emailed my adviser was either in February or March, I can't remember, but he just told me that there were a couple dozen applicants in front of me and they evaluate based on the order that you submit your application..I got the impression that they were really swamped with applications so I'm definitely nervous! But at least they opened up another cohort for the fall to add 50 more spots!
Hey folks,
The advisors are evaluating and ranking all applicants for the highly competitive Fall 2010 cohort. We are evaluating in the order in which we receive your last official transcript and TEAS exam score.
I must point out and turn down the heat in here that there are a limited number of qualified ABSN applicants admitted to the Fall 2010 cohort. The point system is a tool that allows us to rank order and notify our applicants accordingly. To view the point system, please visit: http://www.csusm.edu/el/degreeprograms/absn/ABSNProgramAssignedPointsCriteria.pdf and calculate the points you have.
Should you not make it into the Fall 2010 cohort but applied using the Spring 2011 application, your application will roll forward...if you qualify, you will be considered for the Spring 2011 cohort. Your application and associated documents will be valid for one year from the date you submitted your application.
If you've had the opportunity to attend an ABSN Information Session, you know that Robin and I are here for you...your advisors are listening.
Stay focused on the admissions criteria and don't settle for just meeting the minimums...don't we all want to be nurses that have achieved academic excellence...?
If I may offer some words of wisdom. I am currently enrolled in the program. It is an utter mess. Very unprofessional and unorganized. The new advisors are great but the school of nursing is not. I would not wish this nightmare on my worst enemy. I have heard great things about Univ of Phx and Cal State Dom Hills from my co-workers. They never had the poor experiences I am having. It is new so they need to work our more of the issues. Good Luck, hope this helps you decide ..sorry for the bad news

I spoke to an advisor today and she said that they now have a high number of applicants with high scores and good grades. It is no longer the case that they pretty much accept everyone. They are using the point system now. Not sure how competitive it is now but for sure more than in the past. You pretty much need to have all your classes completed, solid grades, and solid TEAS now.
