Anyone planning on applying to the Spring 2011, CSUSM, accelerated ABSN program? Just wondering if there is anyone else out there:)

Congratulations everyone! it is such a great feeling when you finally get that email. I also got accepted but will be declining the offer so I will open up a spot. See you all in the field in the future!

Yea, I'm in PQ, which is about 7 miles south of San Marcos, but directly off the 15. It takes me 45 minutes to get to Temecula.

I'm not passing up this offer to wait 4 more months for the San Marcos cohort, because who knows what will happen as there are probably close to 600-1000 applicants.

I think the Temecula cohort will still do clinicals around norther San Diego county as CSUSM is part of the San Diego Nursing Consortium.

Plus, I think parking in Temecula is free, whereas San Marcos is like $300-400 for a parking pass.

As a student in the temecula group I can tell you I have had clinicals multiple times in Riverside & Hemet. Know what you are getting in for as far as commuting goes.

So "living on campus" is not really an option. The program is through extended learning so you can't live on campus. There are two campuses for the ABSN. I am enrolled in the Temecula campus. I chose, however, not to live in Temecula. Many students however do live in Temecula which is nice because they are close to campus for lecture which during your 2-6 semesters is one day a week. But no matter where you live you commute quite a bit. Clinicals are in San Diego, Vista, Riverside, Hemet, Temecula.

If you get in to the Temeula campus, then I would say live in Temecula as most of your classmates will live there.

I was able to get in on my first time applying. They were not doing on the point system with our cohort, but perhaps it's more competive now?

There are just lots of extra expenses that come up in the program. We had to buy itouches ($200) itouch nursing software ($200) NCLEX study material ( $400? I think) stethoscopes ($150). Just to name a few. I will have taken out $40,000 for school related costs by the end of the program. But after $30,000 whose counting?

Good luck.

Missnurselady, can I ask where you chose to live if not in Temecula? I'm having that dilemma now, since I'd really like to live more south...

Have you had clinicals in San Diego as well? And how often are classes each week?

My dilemma is that I have waited over a year to finally get in and don't want to pass the chance up. I live in the Northernmost part of SD County, so the drive to Temecula isn't bad (45 minutes).

However, If I do pass it up and wait for the next cohort in San Marcos, I'd probably get in with 36 points.

Hi! Congrats to all the others who got accepted to the program! I also just found out I got accepted to the ABSN program this fall 2011 in Temecula. I currently live in orange county but I am looking to move to Temecula starting August. Is anybody else planning on moving to Temecula? I would like to live with other fellow nursing students for our schedule and life would be similar.

Funny story. for some reason I am not on the email list and did not receive an email but got the acceptance letter today. It was a fun few days seeing everyone else get accepted with lower scores than myself, but everything worked out.

DJX, I will be living in oceanside and would love to commute with you. There should be a fair number of us but we could meet in escondido or the 76 park and ride and the like.

The thing about waiting though is at the last info session, Jay said that they were feeling pressure to bring the extended learning admission standards more on par with the regular BSN program. That means possible volunteer time and what not. The admission requirements now are fairly lax for a program like this. I would get it out of the way before things change. I have been at this for over 2 years with pre reqs and have seen them change scoring, requirements, and a few other things.

Plus if you consider a low ball salary of 50k, every six months you wait to get your degree is 25K will not be making.

Plus, there is still no guarantee that you will get into SM in the spring. I would wait for that promise, but you could just get temecula again.

True gc1010,

But from what I understand for Spring they go by zip code, so the top 54 (seems they changed from 44 to 54) of each zip code (San Diego county and Riverside county) get in to each school.

But you make some good points, and now I'm leaning at staying in magic cohort #10. I hope some others will be commuting from San Diego. A carpool would really help out.

I read some of the requirements that look like they're going to be coming down the pipeline in 2012, wow, I don't want to be any part of that...I think I'll stick to the Temecula cohort.

I think you should stay - I'm liking the sound of magic cohort 10! Where are you reading this?

I'm still thinking of housing around the Vista area...the one bright note is that going north you'd always be going against traffic :)

mimizan,

I think I will stay with the cohort, it's number 10 per the email that went out. If you live in Vista, then more of us can carpool!

djx,

Where did see the new requirements. I only heard of them but had no confirmation of a timeline or what would be added. Just curious.

Also, "magic cohort 10" does sound awesome.
