Cal State San Marcos, CSUSM, Accelerated, ABSN 2011

Anyone planning on applying to the Spring 2011, CSUSM, accelerated ABSN program? Just wondering if there is anyone else out there:)

It's for the basic BSN, but if it comes over to the ABSN side, then it's gonna be a whole lot harder:

http://www.csusm.edu/nursing/2012-2013-g-b-supplemental-criteria.doc

Look at page 2 on. Basically, if you are a bilingual Spanish speaker, you're going to have more points than someone who's volunteered for 200 hours and has direct patient care experience.

BTW when did Jay mention that the they're getting pressure to be like the generic BSN?

At the last info session I went to in april, I think. ------ mentioned it in passing, saying that they were trying to keep the requirements the way they are but the school, possible the regular nursing school, wants to start more mainstreaming of the requirements. I think that they accelerated program is organized through Extended learning but the nursing dept. actually runs that day to day (?). But it could be anytime when those new requirements start coming into play. I don't want to get caught in it.

Is anyone having trouble submitting the deposit by credit card? I tried using amx and visa.

Mine went through fine.

I had trouble withthe system when I paid the 50 dollar application fee, when I paid AMEX. This time I had no problem though. I'm sorry that I can't remember what I did. I think I ended up doing an instant check. I think you have to make sure everything before is correct, also. I had to fill out the form several times because of weird problems. Iguess just try other methods. But you also want your AMEX cash back ;)

yeah, i've been only trying with my cards w/rewards. if i can't get a card through i guess i'll have to use echeck.

This is a financial aid question for those already in the program...

Is the cost of attendance for the program similar to what's on the CSUSM financial aid website (http://www.csusm.edu/finaid/cost_attendance.html) - only adjusted for extended learning tuition?

Is the financial aid process discussed during orientation?

I'm just worried because I'm pretty sure I'll need private loans (in addition to the federal loans) to cover me during the program...

Thanks!!

I totalled everything that they have on the fee schedule and for the 6 semesters, units, books and fees it should cost 35,000 (about).

That assumes the 750 for books every semester which you might be able to save money on. But the high cost of the units is what really drives the price. That dollar value is only for the program. Cost of living is not in there. gas, rent/mortgage, food will be additional costs. Fun!

The only thing to keep in mind is the difference in units per semester. some have 12 units, one has 18, so the latter will be 1,600 more just for that semester. I haven't calculated the totals per semester.

I imagine carpooling is going to be the place to save the most money.

I realize that I was not the intended audience of your original question but hopefully this is helpful.

This is helpful, but my intention was to gauge how much I'd have for living expenses. I plan on borrowing fully during the program, but most loans (even private) only allow you to borrow up to the cost of attendance. Just trying to figure out what that would be! I was hoping since they advise us to not work during the program, they'd allow for a higher food/housing/etc limit.

Also, keep in mind that the estimate provided by the school is only for 9 months so your expenses will at least be 33% more than what they are suggesting. But the cost for living look pretty accurate when adjusted for a full year. I don't remember what the limit is but the max for federal loans is well below what you actually will need. Rich uncle? Time to hit him up.

Hi everyone!

I am looking to live in Temecula starting Fall of 2011 while attending the ABSN program. I have been browsing online for 3 bedroom 3 bath apartments to rent. I would like to get to know you guys! So excited to start!

Also, has anybody heard anything else from CSUSM? It says online that once you get accepted, you need to apply to the actual university? Has anybody done that yet? If so, how do you go about doing so?

Thank you!!!! : )

They're gonna let us know more soon as well as how to apply to the university. I will be living in Rancho Penasquitos and making the 45 minute commute up. I know someone who just graduated from the program and she said classes are on Friday all day and then there are 2 days of clinicals per week. Of course that doesn't sound too bad, but then you've got to allot time for studying and preparing.
