Hi everyone,
I'm a nursing student in the bay area and I just wanted feedback on something I would like to do at my workplace.
I work at a non-profit organization that provide lunch, after-school, and summer programs for high school students. Lately, my kids have been stressing out really bad for a number of reasons. I wanted to set up a group for the kids and do an stress relief activity I did at my clinical site. The activity is called "Stress in a Box." Group members anonymously write a stressor on a piece of paper and place it in the box. Then each person picks out a stressor from the box. Each person says the stressor they picked out of the box and the group collaborates on how to handle the stressors.
My clinical instructor said that nurses lead groups all the time, especially with health teachings. I will check in with her to make sure that it is ok to do so. I just wanted some feedback from the forum for the time being.
Also looked up the CA Board of Nursing Website on scope of practice:
2729. Nursing services may be rendered by a student when these services are incidental to the
course of study of one of the following:
(a) A student enrolled in a board-approved prelicensure program orschool of nursing.
(b) A nurse licensed in another state or country taking a board-approved continuing education
course or a postlicensure course.

This sort of activity can be led by anyone.
You aren't a nursing student in your volunteer life, and don't tell them that you are acting as one. Don't offer suggestions that are beyond your scope of practice, which means, for practical intent, nothing beyond what any reasonably prudent layperson would do, because that's the only scope of practice you have outside of a supervised student experience with school.
If you're just helping people brainstorm about these things, that's something a nurse can do, but not something that has to be done by a nurse.
Have a great time with it!
