bummed about available lpn positions

i'm starting to realize that it isn't going to be easy to find the job i want when i finish school. i'm in practical nursing school right now and i plan to go straight for my rn. i was wanting to find an lpn weekend option at a hopsital, but those seem to be few and far between. i'm scared that i'm going to be stuck at the nursing home i work at now and lose everthing i've learned.

I hear you. I don't really need to work as a LPN but when I passed my boards in July I thought I would get somthing just PRN to get my foot in the door or part time just to gain expierence. There are no jobs around here for LPNs. I am still not working and am pursuing my RN (done in May) I am scared to think that I may not find a RN job when I am done. What is this nursing shortage I keep hearing about?:uhoh3: :uhoh21:

you shouldn't have a problem once you have your rn. everything hospital i look at has multiple rn positions. i guess it depends on what area you are wanting to work.

I know its tough, i had a very hard time right out of school, since there is a real shortage of LPN positions in this area. Plus i am a male nurse, which means that some of few nursing jobs avaliable were immediately closed off to me. I just kept working as a Cert. Pharmacy Tech until something opened up. Just hang in there and keep working at the nursing home until something better comes along, which it will. And don't worry about losing what you have learned. You will pick a lot of that back up in RN school, plus you will have all the LPN books leftover that you can skim back through.

Really? I can't believe what I am hearing. I live in Virginia currently but plan to move back to Missouri after I earn my LPN or RN (that is another story). I would think there would be jobs right? In general, I heard as an LPN - jobs are being depleted from the hospitals. I don't know why. I guess because they are limited in their scope of services relatively speaking as compared with RNS. That is a scarey thought though to think that as an LPN I would have a hard type finding a job in Missouri. That sucks :(

Have you tried an agency? What about private home duty jobs?

I live in MO you should have no problem in MO. You can work in the hospital, home health, case management and UR . There was a position I was interested in but due to budget cuts they were hiring a LPN.

How are nursing jobs closed off to you due to being a male, are not the places you are working for an equal op employer?

Is Western Missouri Med Center not hiring LPN's anymore? I worked there straight out of school and loved it. I went to school in Burg too. Small world. I worked Med/Surg and floated all over! I really enjoyed it. Good luck to you!

I'm an RN and work side by side with TONS of LPN's in KC area hospitals. I work agency full time, so I get to see quite a few facilities and units. MS and Rehab floors in particular are packed with LPN's. If you've got the experience, maybe you should give agency a shot. Might help to get your foot in the door somewhere, but if you're like me you might end up deciding to just stay with your agency. I got into agency work 8 years ago and have never left. :)

its true.. u can mostly find LPNs at nursing homes.... what i recently found out though is that if you are an LPNII which is what ill be in Dec, alot of hemotology clinics hire LPNs and are always looking... im with ya on the whole nursing home thing though... good luck with everything!
