10. People need to learn to stand up to someone treating them poorly. Also, people use the word "bullying" too often.

YES without a doubt!!!

No. I was a victim of horrible bullying in school and never, ever forgot how it felt. I would not perpetrate it on anyone else.

Yes

no not these days!!! If anything, it's over-emphasized.

Keep up awareness and education and do not tolerate TRUE bullying in the workplace. Also we need to recognize what bully IS and what it is NOT.

10. In my experience a lot of nurses who participate in bullying were never taught about appropriate and inappropriate ways to treat people which is staggering to me. I have seen a lot of lateral violence and bullying in nursing that would never be tolerated within any other profession or workplace and I have left a position because bullying of certain nurses compromised patient safety. And I think that definitions need to be set forth by local and national organizations to distinguish bullying from people just having bad days and/or people over-reacting to actions that are not intended to harm.

People who are having conflict with others that wouldn't be classified as bullying (that is, difficult but not deliberately vindictive personalities) need to address offenders directly. But in cases where people are truly bullying, management needs to be cognizant of bullying and actually DO something about it when it occurs. *True* bullying as defined by the ANA is unconscionable and something that should never be tolerated.

People doing things that other people don't like *isn't* bullying and shouldn't be labeled as such. Therein, I think, lies the biggest disconnect. Overuse and abuse of the term bullying has caused a "boy who cried wolf" effect in cases where actual bullying is a problem. And that, in itself, is a problem too.

Yes

Once, yes as a brand new nurse. It Resulted in my being let go during orientation.

Now, I don't interject or take action. I work around it using various strategies.

I've never initiated it. But I do recall a few times when my peers collectively decided to say another nurse was a bad nurse and I did not stick up for the person, except to say, I think she's doing ok. In 2 cases, nurses were let go or quit and I still feel bad, like I should have done more.

Yes

Yes

Yes

It's not ignored. However, it's addressed in a superficial manner that doesn't really fix the problem or provide solutions to people who feel victimized.

10. What do you think should be done to eliminate bullying/incivility within nursing?

Bullying/ Rude behavior should be able to be reported without fear of retaliation. In fact, special protections should be put in place for the person who reports it.
