BS Biology or ADN RN? any advice?

Published

I am currently a student at a university. My major is biology and I have 3 semesters left. In the summer I applied to a associate RN program and I just got an acceptance letter yesterday. I applied because I really want to do something in the medical field and I wanted to keep my options open. I have come to realize that with this biology degree, there is not very much I can do in this economy. The only thing I am considering is teaching through an alternative certification program. The only advanced degree I am interested in is physician's assistant and I don't think I have the volunteers, honors, awards, or anything special that would get me into a program around here. I don't want to pursue a masters in biology or genetics because honestly, it bores me.

Should I finish my bachelor in biology or do the nursing program and pick up on my bachelors later?

Also, I have been thinking that I really don't want to teach because I don't want to deal with disrespectful kids all day, every day. (My dad is a bus driver and a few of my aunts and uncles are teachers and they have said that the kids are just getting worse.)

Thanks for your input or advice. :)

Are there any BS RN programs in your area? I only say that because you've likely done a lot of the BS requirements already, and it could be 2 years of nursing school either way....one you come out with a BS and the other an ADN...

Specializes in Urgent Care NP, Emergency Nursing, Camp Nursing.

If you want to finish out your BS in Biology, check around your area for Graduate-Entry or Masters-Entry programs, as well as for accelerated bachelors programs. They all require an undergraduate degree.

Also, while you're still in school, knock out your prereqs if you haven't already.

I would go for the nursing program since you have already been accepted. We all know how hard it is to get accepted into a program. You are right there are not many options for biology majors with BS you have to have advanced degrees to really get a good job in that field.

IMO if you're pressed for money, switch to the ADN program now. If money isn't the primary factor, finish up the BS in Biology and in your senior year apply to a 1-year accellerated BSN program that would start right after you graduate with that BS in biology. If you have a good GPA I'm sure you won't have too hard a time being accepted to the accellerated BSN program.
