brownish/black vaginal discharge

Published

Hi all, I hope you don't mind my graphic description but I'm afraid I have to be very specific about this. This month when I got my period it had been about 40 days since my last menstration, which is a little abnormal for me. Anyhow, I attribute the lateness to stress about finals and moving. I have had spotting of a thickish dark brown discharge for 2 days but no bright red heavy flow like usual. I have had the brown discharge before but that was always at the very end of a long period and I was told it was just brown because it was old blood. Does that sound right? If so, I am wondering why the dark brown would be at the beginning of my period. I was just suprised this time because usually when my period first starts it is bright red and then eventually darkens in color a few days later.

Coincodenlty, I am started using the Nuvaring for the first time ever a few days after the spotting started even though I did not have a full period I thought it wise to start. After starting the Nuvaring the spotting stopped all together. Is this becasue of the hormones in the Ring?

I am just wondering if this is normal? Is it the darker color just because of the length of time since my last period or should I go in for a checkup? Any help appreciated.

I know nothing about the ring you mentioned. Just wondered if you could be pregnant? I still had one period after becoming pregnant, but it was different than my usual. I know that pregnant women can have the brown (old blood) periods. Just a thought.

I am referring to the new contraceptive ring called Nuvaring. You must not be a nurse because it is widely known especially among ob/gyns. And I have taken multiple pregnancy tests especially since I was a few days late and they all showed negative. It has been at least 3 weeks since the last time I had sex (we used a condom) so I am sure the pg test would have shown positive if I was pg.

sounds like abnormal hormones ect, could be stress related, period cycles change with age too. My persiods where always regular, normal blood colour & normal flow ect untill l hit 34 yrs and my hormones damn well changed on me, now l have headaches and spotting when my period is due

I am wondering why if someone does not know about this "ring" would you think they were not a nurse? I am a home health nurse/elderly clients/no ob peds patients/ with hem/onc/bmt experience. I hated ob/peds and do not even stay abreast in OB/peds. My kids are all older. Nurses alot of the time are specialilzed and cannot stay abreast in every aspect of nursing or one would never sleep.

I hope someone responds to your post. It had a non pleasant tone which I am not sure if you meant or not. Ahhhh the glory of non face to face contact. Things can be inflected that are not meant.

When was your last pap? I have had several pregnancy tests that were negative but low and behold 8 months later I had a bundle of joy. I am certain it could be stress. I wish that would have affected me at one time, LOL I was never that lucky to miss or have an easy one.

Have a good day,

I thought the same thing, I am a nurse but not ob/gyn, have three children, not planning anymore (tubes tieD) and never heard of the nuvring.....

So you would expect nurses who work with a geriatric population to know about this new form of birth control simply because they are a nurse?

You should be aware that just because you had a negative hpt doesn't meant that you aren't pregnant. I had 5 negative urine tests with my first pregnancy. Never had a positive test (and that was a blood test) until I was 4 months along.

Please remember that you are asking for our help and just because someone may not know about a certain subject doesn't mean that he/she may not be a nurse. So does this mean that you must not be one, since you don't know every little detail about the female menstrual cycle? Maybe it means you must not be a nurse, because if you were you would know that we (nurses) have our own specialities and not all of them (specialties) deal with the Nuvaring (which I also never heard of and I have been an LPN for 5 years and am Graduating from RN school this month). We haven't even heard about it in our OB rotation in school!!! Must not be a real school, HUH!

LonghornSara -- I DO have a lot of OB/GYN experience and have not heard of your "ring" I am a nurse -- but maybe our doctors around here aren't doctors -:uhoh21: - if they aren't using the ring!!! HMMM!

Pardon the sarcasm please, but try to keep in mind that just because something is popular in one region of the country or world -- doesn't mean that is popular everywhere. Neither does being unfamiliar with one product (whether popular in your area of expertise or not) does not preclude one's being a nurse and a darn good one at that! ) I am hoping that you were not trying to be belittling, superior sounding or rude -- sure came across that way.

Hope all is well with you physical isue! Pregnancy tests aren't always reliable, ahormones can do some REAL weird things to us... so many possibilities -- if you are concerned, by all means get it checked out -- better safe than sorry!

sounds like implantation bleeding to me....i would go get a blood hgt drawn asap :)

I have 27 years of OB experience (RN in Labor and Delivery) and also am unfamiliar with the Nuvaring. Of course, by the time we see patients, any kind of conctraception is a moot point, isn't it?

Sorry to have offended any of you nurses who do not know of the Nuvaring. I could not imagine a current OB/GYN nurse never hearing about it, and that is how I should have phrased my comment.

Amusing that I got many more replies from that one remark than my original post. People like to defend themselves I suppose.

I am going in to have a blood test tomorrow to check pregnancy and hormone balance.
