Hello,

I am starting the RN program on Monday, 08/20/07. I am wondering if there are any other students here who are attending or have attended. I am interested in some guidance and a study group. I live in Sunrise and go to the Central Campus in Davie.

Please PM me for my email.

thanks.

Sandy...,

Good luck in GU/GI in January. Try to enjoy the holiday break. I'm trying to relax before starting in Jan. I'm happy that you had a good experience with your CI.

Well,

I am now on my way to GI/GU in January. I really love my clinical instructor. She was VERY ENCOURAGING and told us how much she believed that we could excel if we put our mind to knowing the material and not just trying to memorize things to get past. I have heard that Central Campus is the hardest and so far, I can say that it has not been an easy ride. The list at Miami Dade is like a bunch of applicants on the list according to cumulative GPA. They pick the highest ones (with 3.4 being the cutoff). Each time a group of applicants come in they pick the highest cumulative GPAs and the rest stay there until there is room. I have spoken to the Dean of Nursing for Miami Dade and she was very serious about the policy regardless of how it held students with a high PROGRAM GPA back. That is why I waited a year before trying BCC. I am very grateful for the opportunity or else I would not have been going to school so close to home and I would not have met my VERY ENCOURAGING clinical instructor. Good luck to you all and wish me enormous amounts of study time for the future.:lol2:

I am so happy for you that you and leavingteaching4rn both made it to GI/GU.

Nursing school is hard, but if you study and stick to it, you will do well.

I know 2 close friends of mine started nursing school after me, both failed the first semesters....eventhough I warned them that they needed to study like animals because not everyone makes it... I gave them books, I tried helping them of whatever I could... but I guess they didn't make the effort like how I did it in school... oh well.

Congrats to you both I am sure you will keep doing great!!

I am starting to read my Med Surg book now. We already know the chapters to read. I want a head start because I think I want to get the scholarship and I want to make sure that my GPA will be up to par. Thanks for the congrats. Alot of people in my class didn't take the reading seriously. Alot of people underestimated the amount of time required.

IamPattyRn,

Thanks but I haven't made it through GI/GU yet. I don't start until Jan, but I am going to take your advice and study, study, study. I'm buying my bundle next week and I'll start reading during the holiday break.

I'm taking Micro this summer and I hear it is a killer. What make it so difficult? Any advice for Micro?

Micro...is a blur. I remember that all of the classes were the issue. you had to know what bacteria/virus/protozoa/etc. caused what disease. It was so hard to remember all of them, but I was forced to rely on my book because my teacher was all over the place so I had no choice but to learn them. What makes it so hard is remembering the families, class, whether they are gram stain negative or positive. I still am a little fuzzy on the gram stains, but I am planning on brushing up on that. My advice. read each chapter, take your notes on them, do the chapter questions, and use the CD included in the book. Good luck.

when I was i GI/GU, i used the little companion book that comes with the medsurg book, it looks just like the big green medsurg book, except that it is little, you can get it at the book store or at borders (at borders with the card you get discounts!)

I would read the big book once and make my notes on the slides, then I would read the little book tons of times and bring it with me everywhere, it has the most important things on the diseases plus the nursing interventions.

I also practiced question with "lippincott review for nclex-rn" and sometimes the teacher even had questions straight from the book.

there is another book that I used also that explains to you things in simple terms called "med/surg reviews and rationales" and it is great, teaches you point by point plus has questions at the beginning and end of each chapter, I used that book for gi.gu and orthoneuro.

for ob/gyn I used "maternal newborn nursing reviews and rationales" and after the first test, I knew it was such a waste of time reading that huge red book. I would read the little companion book, then the rationales book.

I used the books because sometimes the teachers.... not sometimes...most of the times don't give you information of what they want you to know for the test. so I always used my slides and the review books. to help me understand the material

Sandy... and IamPatty...,

Did you debind your nursing books? I'm considering doing this to keep from carrying the entire book.

No, I didn't debind my book. I just brought the textbook to class and highlighted during the lecture. I didn't have to carry many books because I only had one class on Mon and Fri, Clinicals on Wed., and Pharm on thurs. nights. I just kept everything ready in the car and used the disk at home. It will really help if you get a laptop and use the CD that comes with the box. It has most of the texts on it. You'll get into the swing of it. Keep Tabers nearby, too.

I have no idea what that means.

I just carried the book. it's only one, and you don't have to take it to school unless you stay at the library to study

I hate that CD that comes with the box, I tried and tried to put it on the computer and it never worked. plus my eye startto hurt after a while of looking at the screen

Shopping for books

Should I buy the bundle? They try to make it seems as if you're getting a good deal, but the bundle is $54 more than it would cost to purchase the books individually.

Also, the bookstore in the gas station has used books which total about $142 less than the bundle.

So, are the e-volve (electronic) books worth the extra money?

Are there CDs or website codes that I'll miss if I buy the used books?

Thanks!
