Hello,
I am starting the RN program on Monday, 08/20/07. I am wondering if there are any other students here who are attending or have attended. I am interested in some guidance and a study group. I live in Sunrise and go to the Central Campus in Davie.
Please PM me for my email.
thanks.
I was wondering if you completed HCP0130 before applying to the program? i tried searching for that class but the database always tells me there's an error.. i want to apply for the nursing program for Fall 09 and the deadline is May 15. I already register for all the other core courses (HIV... ect) except that one.. please reply. thanks
You have to complete or be enrolled in HCP 0130 in order for your application to be accepted. If you've completed it within the last 10 years or are currently working in the medical field, you qualify for a waiver.
I also wondering which campus should i apply for. South or Central
You don't apply to a campus. You apply to the college and then once accepted, you simply register for the campus you wish to attend. South and Central campuses accept fewer students than North campus does. So, if you wish to attend either of those campuses, be sure to register early.
Do you know if i have to speak to a counselor to enroll in HCP0130? how long is that class? I remember someone told me if I was part of the HOSA organization when i was in high school, i can also be waived? Also, I will finish my Bachelors in Health Administration this May... do you think that includes in the waiver?
The HCP class fills up VERY quickly. The only way you will be able to take it now in time to be able to apply for the Fall program is to speak to an advisor and have them register you for it, since they're already overbooked. The class is one day a week, for 8 weeks. Its from 4pm-10pm each class. There's one class that meets on Mondays, one on Tuesdays, one on Thursdays or one on Fridays. Its only held at the central campus.
I'm not sure if you can get a waiver for it because of HOSA, so you will have to check on that, but you will get 5 pts for it for when you apply.
The only other alternative you have for the HCP class is to take it through Sheridan Tech. They have a Health Careers Core class that was specifically designed for BC students. You can take it online, which is only a 3 week course and is a lot of work in a little bit of time. It is the 75 hrs we need for the HCP, plus its BLS (CPR), domestic violence, HIV, etc. and its still cheaper than just the HCP at BC (BC is $260, Sheridan is $219). They also have a face-to-face option for the class, but I have no idea how long that is or when it is exactly. I did notice that it says $239 on the website, but I paid $219. I don't know if it was cheaper because I am taking it online or not, but its still cheaper than the BC class. CPR alone is almost $100 if you were to take that anywhere else. I heard from the Assoc. Dean of Nursing specifically that they do accept this course from Sheridan, however, I would suggest double checking with the campus you are interested in attending just to be sure. I think they just require that the certificates you receive are certified by the Florida Board of Nursing. Sheridan will also say that BC does accept this. I'm pretty positive there wouldn't be any issues with the class being taken at Sheridan, but I would always double check things for myself, so I recommend others to do the same and not just take my word for it. (I also had a class with someone who said they were going to take it from McFatter Tech, you can look into that option as well).
You can possibly get into the one at BC, but you would really need to speak to someone. I would try to do that ASAP in case they just get too overbooked and are unable to add anymore people.
Good luck

Well it looks like you won't need to worry about it because of the HOSA, but I'm not sure why the online class says MW. I had to go in once for orientation at 2:30pm and that was on a Tuesday. I have to go in one more time for the CPR class on a Friday from 8:45a-3pm. Everything else is online. I think the guy told me I could do the orientation on the phone IF I absolutely had to, but I'm not sure.
Anyway, its a good thing you did the HOSA in high school. Wish I had, but I guess it wouldn't have mattered for me since I graduated in '95 and it wouldn't be valid anymore for me now.
sunraygurl - thank you I hope I don't have to do it. I was in HOSA for four years since '02 Did you start the program @ bcc? Or are you done? Do u know how long the program is? Is it 1 year or 2? Since I read that it's full time. I'm guessing one has to do 15 credits per term (3 theory & it's labs) making it 3 terms in total or is full time for nursing different? Once again thank you!
I'm not in the program yet. I will be applying for either this August or next January (more than likely January).
As far as how long it is, it is 5 semesters long. The semesters are broken down similar to that of how session 2 and 4 classes work. Usually the classes run the length of the semester, 16 weeks, but in the program each class will run 8 weeks long instead. (Except in the summer it will be 6 weeks, since that is a shorter 12 week semester). During the first semester you will have to take a nursing math class that runs about 4 or 5 weeks long, and pharmacology (you will take this for the entire 16 weeks). This is the only time you will be taking anything other than the nursing lecture and the clinical classes.
The total credit hours for the program is 45 (nursing lectures and clinicals). The pharmacology class adds another 2 credit hours, and the math is another 1 credit hour. Most semesters you will be taking about 10 credit hours, with the exception of the first, which will be 13, and there is one semester that you get a break during the second half of the semester, so you will only have 5 credit hours that semester.
Hopefully, this didn't confuse you completely, lol.
