Broward College Nursing May 2015

Published

Hi everyone I didn't see one made yet so I guess this will be the official thread for BC May 2015!

Yes, I am going to take advantage of every bit of advice you provided. Thank you again I actually checked out a pharm and dosage calculations book today to gain a head start. I will definitely start practice taking vital signs as well.

@ whateverpie

BTW, I am trying to sign up for the Domestic violence and Florida Laws and Rules for Nursing and Respiratory care courses. How do I find these courses ?

Finally got everything fixed for my application and now I am finally in "Application in review" status! Thank goodness I'm getting somewhere

Hey guys so I went to health admission to ask about applications they said we won't know until the end of March or mid March this sucks.......!

I haven't done any of them yet, but will probably do them through Broward unless I can't find any available with them. Again, I thought it was one of those things I had to wait for until my acceptance was confirmed....boy I'm a slacker! :(

Did everyone or will everyone use CEUfast? How does that work? Currently I am registered for the ones through Broward but just on the schedule. Thanks!

Dipp14- I'm sure they will sort it all out for you in time. They are used to these timelines, whereas to the person waiting it seems forever. Best of Luck :)

I do believe you will have to do your prerequisites for the program unless they count some of your classes and give you credit for them- you never know you may get lucky. I guess it's a wait and see game for you right now...hang in there...good things come to those who wait.

I know statistics are rough for intake vs. grads, but as long as you give your 100%, I wouldn't focus on that too much. People leave the program for a variety of reasons and I'm sure it's not all to do with grades/program, etc.

Congrats on your sister's wedding- the Autumn semester will be in session in September, but I'm sure you can work something out :)

Thanks Londonfog, all that information is really helpful! What i meant was Broward have received my general application (the deadline for internationals is 1st March for May semester) and they said they will be sending out my acceptance pack and visa documents hopefully very soon. I imagine I will have to do pre-requisites because my degree was completely unrelated. I've been a nursing assistant for 3 years, so that's what has finally encouraged me to do my training. I'm hoping to start in May, however I'm being realistic in how long the process can take, and goodness knows how I will take pre-entrance tests! :s My sister is getting married in September, so as long as I can come home for that, I'm happy haha.

Been reading on other forums about how many people graduate versus the number of people who drop out/get kicked out! Definitely crazy statistics, lets hope for the best for us all!

Thanks dolfanjenny- that's so helpful :)

Hey Katherine_q u can do it through the school or CEUfast it completely up to u. The school accepts both. CEUfast is cheaper the only thing is that the CAE0644 certificate that I mentioned above u can only do through broward I think it's $15 not sure. I'm doing my CPR renewal at paramount training ($49) cheapest one I could find u just have to make sure wherever u do CPR that its approved through the American heart association. Hope this helps!

THANK YOU SO MUCH for all your advice whateverpie. We all really appreciate you taking the time to do this. It helps so much :)

Hey guys! I'm in my first semester at North campus and it's been a riot! We just did our first day of clinicals today and it was awesome! This program has started off different than I imagined. It's difficult, but very manageable as long as the effort is put in and you stay dedicated. I'm pulling great grades so far.

Some advice for surviving your first month:

Paperwork: They ask for a lot of complicated paperwork (physical, vaccines, titer, drug test etc.) Get it together as best you can but know that if something is missing, it's not the end of the world! You'll have about three weeks into the program to get anything you're missing.

Reading: There is a ton of reading for Process! The first test (for North this term) was on Vital Signs, Health Assessment, Safety, Hygiene, Documentation, and the Nursing Process. (start reading now!) Attempt to read everything in the main Fundamentals textbook (written by Potter/Perry). Pay special attention to the boxed readings.

Tests: Purchase a good NCLEX review book and the Fundamentals Success book (written by Nugent/ Vitale). They are invaluable for learning NLCEX style. The tests are all NCLEX style questions (mostly scenario type) so get familiar with that before the first test!

Math: Don't worry about the math as it will all be explained to you. There are two chances to take the first math test (its in the 4th week of the semester) and a calculator can be used.

Preparing: You will need to print everything that is posted to D2L! Don't wait to do this! Purchase some good shoes as they will be invaluable when doing long hours at the hospital. It comes around faster than you think! Buy a rolley bag! (tons of heavy books), and lastly, PREPARE yourself, your family, and your friends for a new you. This program is tough because it requires so much time and energy. Everything will fall into place if you start off knowing that you can do this and will put every effort into it!

Best of luck to all of you!

Glad you got that sorted ah913- now the dreaded wait! :)

Finally got everything fixed for my application and now I am finally in "Application in review" status! Thank goodness I'm getting somewhere

AmbitiousQ For math, you'll have to know the whole book but it's all going to be taught to you in class!

For pharm, in the north campus its Dr.K and he teaches through his lecture slides. All of the nervous system (ch13) are on the first test, nothing else! He does one test a month so it's very manageable.

Hey whateverpie thx soooooo much for all the info and advice I know I speak for everyone when I say we appreciate it very much. Reading your post has calmed my nerves especially about the math. Thx for taking time out of your busy schedule to inform us on your experience! :)

Well thanks WhateverPie! You helped ease my anxiety. I've never been more ready for something.. It all sounds so exciting and surreal! Thanks for the great tips!

And you were saying when it says: Application In Review.. That means we got in?? I've heard in the past once you see ' PreAdmission ' you wait for your email confirmation & then orientation! Ahhh anxiously waiting ...

& Dolfan Yep I guess I should come to terms that we won't hear till after spring break.. But your right! Does anyone have Nicole's email? Id like to check up hehe :)
