New thread started for all those applying for / accepted to / attending Broward College January 2011. Chime in, let us know how you're doing!
Hey!! Does anyone know if once you start the Nursing program if you can transfer to another school/RN program after the first semester?
I just started this year and we just had the orientation. Basically NO YOU CANNOT TRANSFER. You can try and speak to the dean and see if they will grant you a relocation if there is space on another campus but it rarely happens.
Transferring to another school, Blondie? I haven't heard that anyone has done that? It seems very difficult.
Transferring to a different campus? Yes, it DOES happen. My friend was going to transfer and her Dean was approved it however my friend ended up changing her mind. Also someone in my OB class right now just transferred from South to my campus (North). I also know of one other person who transferred with no problems. So, it happens.
Jena how is it going so far?? Is it like extremely overwhelming?? I am excited and scared all at once. I have NO idea what to expect.
Hey! First week down and all I have to say is this is EXTREMELY overwhelming, but doable. I just so happen to be that person that has a 2 year old daughter and I have to work because I have a mortgage and bills to pay so I don't have the little extra time that you DO NEED. When they tell you that you need to cut down your work schedule if you work, they were not lying. Granted, I am in the first year and along with theory and clinical we have pharmacology and math, so there is a little extra that we have to do as well, so that takes up your time. Plus, you have to do a certain amount of extra hours in the nursing lab for a grade so you have to be available. When I woke up on the third day I looked at my husband and started crying. lol. This is hard, I am not going to lie, but people do it all the time and are successful so I believe I can do this too!
What I would recommend for those of you who know you got in and want to get a head start is get the objectives for theory somehow (we have a packet in the bookstore that is a module packet for NUR1020 and NUR1020L and NUR1210 and NUR1210L) and start looking up the objectives in that packet and answering them from the Fundamentals of nursing Perry and Potter book. Only problem with that is, I don't know if the objectives change, or if the book may change, or if some instructors and campuses have different objectives? I am at South and I bought my module packet at Central and they are the same thing, but there was a packet for a specific instructor at Central that had something different.
So, I am so happy you are excited because you are about to embark on a journey to another demention! I will warn you that they first week is crazy because you are adjusting to being in a program that is fast paced and demanding, but you need to keep telling yourself that YOU CAN DO IT and YOU WILL DO IT! If you keep yourself positive and surround you with positive and supportive people, it can be done! But you will need time available to you because you need to spend a lot of time in school and when you are outside of school you better be studying!
Good luck to you all! I don't know too much yet because I have only just started but I am here to help and can answer any questions you might have :)
So glad to hear it's not impossible, lol. I'm a bit nervous myself, because my husband and I have a one year old son- and we're BOTH going into the program in January!! We don't work, and we live with my parents, so that's a little help, but I'm still having nightmares.... Definitely need to get studying. What books is it we should get exactly? Like do you have titles/author/ISBN--PM me if you want, please. I want to get the Fundamentals of Nursing from Perry Potter but I'm not sure if they're coming out with an 8th edition and I don't want to spend all of the money just to end up needing another newer edition. They use the Pickar dosage book for MTB right?
Hey I'm applying to the January 2011 too! How come some of y'all already got accepted? Don't they start sending emails 30 days after the deadline?? And does anyone how many seats are available for the juanuary 2011 class?? and if we have to turn in any medical exams (med history, physical exam, background check, drug test, ANYTHING) with our application? I know i have sooo many questions but the counselors haven't been much help and I'm doing this all on my own.
THANKS=]

Some of them applied for August and for some reason got accepted for Jan instead because it was full already. This is the first time they started using the HESI and at first they weren't getting enough applications. Then they changed the way they were using the HESI and started getting more applications. I think they didn't know what to do really and it was confusing. Maybe someone who got accepted for Jan can elaborate more.
At any rate though, the medical exam, background check, drug test and fingerprinting does not have to be now to turn in with your application. Once you are accepted into the program, you will be given a date to attend an orientation. There they will give you all the information about where to go, how much it costs, the forms you need and what to do with everything when you are done.
Oh you're awesome thanks a lot..I know they look more and your gpa and the HESI is just for them to review. So what's like an average score for the HESI? I did pretty good but my gpa isn't the best. And I only had once chance to take it[on Wednesday] bc I've been finding out all this information of things I needed before I turned in my application.
They previously said that HESI scores should be 75% or higher on each test, but I think reading was maybe 70%? I've heard people say something about them really wanting scores at least in the 80s though; then again I've also heard they don't really care--so who knows?
I think, personally, that GPA will matter more. I'm not sure how this term will go, but previous application terms I've heard people with 10 pts and up are accepted, 8 or 9 are put on wait list.
Good luck!!

Well, you don't get to pick your professors because there is one professor for each course. There is a second nursing process professor, but she teaches the people who are retracking (either failed the course or withdrew from the course). Other than that, you are stuck, but when it comes time take the specialties (psych, peds and OB) you can pick which course you want to take first. They give preference to the class ahead of you because that's their last specialty so they need to be able to take that course, but for the most part, everyone I know ended up getting the specialty they chose. Anyway, thats about all the choosing you do. Also, we are responsible to register ourselves each term.
I like north. I can't compare it to south or central, though. You'll find some people who hate north, and you'll find those that like it. It's really all subjective I guess. Good luck in A&P.
