Leavingteaching, since you say students use the old edition are they allowed to? Also, which edition are you guys using for math (dosage calculations)?

It's not a matter of being allowed to, they just do it. Usually, the only difference is the order of the chapters and maybe a few diagrams. I've always used the current edition b/c the books have been available to me. I bought a few and borrowed the rest from upperclassmen or former students. Some buy the older books because of the price difference $150 vs. $9. If you ask the teachers, they'll say you must have the new book. I swear they get a kick back from the bookstore.

Most students don't buy the math book unless they really struggle with math. If you buy it, they edition doesn't matter because math rules and theories haven't changed. Just be sure, it's ratio and proportion NOT dementional analysis.

Also, books are adopted by the college not the campus. So, the books should be the same at every campus. The supplements and packets may differ.

Leavingteaching, The reason I ask about the math is that I heard that it is difficult so, I wanted to start to study. Also, what book do they use for Pharmacology??

The math is basic math at maybe the 6th grade level. Difficulty would be relative to the math ability of the person solving the problem. If you struggle with math (multiplication, division, subtraction, proportion), buying the book and studying math in advance may be a good idea. However, I don't know anyone who fails because of math. Students may have to retake math test, but I don't know anyone who fails out of the program due to math.

I can't stress how important it is to work on critical thinking and test taking skills.

You can find a book list at www.broward.edu/~gbrickma

Is the math class what deals with pharmacology or is pharmocology a totally diff class??

Math and Pharm are separate courses. In pharm, you learn about drugs (classification, actions, interaction, interventions, contraindications, etc.). The math course is drug dosage classifications. You can answer the math questions correctly without understanding anything about the drugs.

You can find sample math problems on the same website that has the booklist. www.broward.edu/~gbrickma

Does anybody know if we need to buy an "orientation package" for Thursday? The email doesn't say anything, but a student told today that we'll need one?

Hi Futurenurse,

You said you were going to South? The book we used was the same one on the booklist that Leavingteaching directed you to: Dosage Calculations, 2nd Edition, by Gloria D. Pickar.

The professor who taught us, said she also teaches it to the generic class, so I imagine that you will get her. In hindsight, I agree that the book isn't needed. However, she actually e-mailed us homework to do from it, prior to the first day of class. But when I had questions, I got the most help from another student, not from the book itself.

We also lost about 6 people because of math. We were told that you can't pass meds if you fail the Math exam. And we had about 15 people fail the first time, then 6 the second time. And those six are no longer in the program. I think two of them stayed in the Pharm class to get it over with. But all of them were dropped from clinicals after the second failure.

This is not to try and scare you by any means, because the Math really isn't that bad. Like I have told people, with our class it was the little things that got people, like putting .25 as your answer, where it should have been 0.25. Or rounding to the nearest whole number, when you should have rounded to the tenth.

I know each campus is a bit different. But since I saw you were going to south, I just wanted to share my experience. :)

honeybee723,

joifulgurl, I believe you may not use a calculator.

honeybee, thank you so much for the insight. So, do you think I should start working out the math problems from www.broward.edu/~gbrickma so I can begin practicing because I really dont want to fail??? Also, the thing that had me a little confused about the math and pharm class is that when I click the math link all I saw were problems with dosage so I just thought it was pharmacolody, but now thanks to leavingteaching,I understand that pharmacology is drug, action, interactions, etc and math is the math involved in knowing how much medication to give to a patient. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thank you again.

At which campus and what class is the orientation being held at., i still have not received iny info, im an alternate.
