Hello everyone!! I have been doing my support courses for the last year and a half and I'm going to apply for the nursing program at Brookhaven this month. Though I'm not really stressing about it I am a little worried. This is my 3rd attempt at college and the first 2 times I did horrible!! Since I made the choice to go to nursing school in Summer of 2009, I've brought my GPA up from 1.76 to 3.0. And, all my grades in my support classes have been A's and B's except 1, Nursing Pathophysiology. I made a C in that class and it would have been a B if I had not made one mistake at the end of the course. So, my question is does anyone think that C in that class will hinder me much? If anyone can offer any insight it would be great. Thanks!!
Question for someone already in the program (or graduated :) ). The clinicals are listed in the schedule from 7am-7pm, are those the actual hours we are there or do they just put that? I have friends in other programs and it's usually 6am-1 or 2pm or 7am-3pm for them.
The clinicals are usually from about 6:30 til about 5:30. That is for first semester. It may differ from each professor. It starts at 6:30 am because you have to get there and turn in your paperwork, discuss what is going on for the day and then get to the floor by 6:45 am for shift report. Then you will have a post clinical conference to discuss your day. During second semester I was there from 6:30 am til 7 pm. You will def. have 12 hour shifts on your 4th semester clinicals.
Does anyone have trouble with financial aid at Brookhaven? I am EXTREMELY bummed that I might not be able to start summer 1 classes on Monday because I am still waiting for my summer 1 financial aid/pell grant to pay for my tuition They say that I must pay out of pocket and when the pell money finally gets in that they will reimburse me but hello - I qualify for financial aid because I DO NOT have the income to pay out of pocket
Now it's going to take me even longer to get my pre-reqs done
Hopefully FA for summer 2 will get here in time!!
Also, can anyone answer my question that I asked a few replies back about the Dosage class?
Briterz,
This summer is my first semester at Brookhaven but I took a couple of classes at NCTC last semester and I had the same problem with financial aid. I was expected to pay on my own and my financial aid didn't go through until halfway through the semester when I had already finished paying on the payment plan. I don't remember where I heard it (maybe one of the posts on here?) but I am expecting Brookhaven to be the same way in the fall so I am just going to make sure I have saved enough during the summer to pay for my fall classes. I went to UTA previously and this was not my experience at all, we usually had our classes paid for and our refund checks a week before classes even started. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the case with community colleges.
I know the professor teaching dosage right now won't be back in the fall so I assume that's why they aren't offering any sections. Not sure about other places to take it.
Man that's too bad, she's a good professor. Briertz, I'm sorry to hear about the financial aid problems... about the Dosage class, you might consider asking one of the advisers if there is a course at other colleges you could substitute for it... maybe something at quad C? If they aren't going to offer it, it would make sense that they'd let you substitute another class for it... I know a lot of people do that with End of Life (they take Death & Dying at quad C). Hope that helps!
Thanks guys! It looks like my FA money won't be in for Summer 1 tuition but hopefully it will be here to pay for Summer 2 and Fall! I can make up the classes I'll be missing in Summer 1 during the Fall so I won't be behind a semester.
I'll talk the lady in the nursing office about the dosage class. I emailed the teacher who usually teaches it (who won't be teaching this Fall) and she told me my best bet was to talk to 'so and so' in the nursing office :)

From what I heard from my classmates is that the financial aid comes in right around the end of the semester. some of it has to do with the teachers certifying the class so that FA knows you are in there and can assign you the monies. Brookhaven/DCCCD likes to hold on to it for some reason and disperse it at or near the end of the semester.
Hope this helps.
Quick question! Y'all that are starting in the fall or already graduated - what can I get before starting the program in terms of supplies, etc? I want to pick up a few things I'll need while I'm still working to soften the financial blow, even if just by a little bit. Is there anything I definitely shouldn't get in advance because it's included in the pack they have you buy? Anybody have any ideas? :) Any input will help! Thanks!!

So Brookhaven has their fall schedule up to look at (not register yet!) and I see that they don't have a Dosage class for the fall
Do you guys know if any other DCCD school offers this class?? or any online schools??
