Brookhaven Nursing Program - Spring 2012 Admission

Published

Hello everyone, I am searching for fellow nursing applicants who plan to apply for Spring 2012 admission into Brookhaven's nursing program. A little about myself, I am currently completing my support courses (A&P II, Pharmacology, and Microbiology), and for the summer I'll be taking Spanish 1411. I gave the HESI test a try (2/15/11) just to get a feel for it, and I scored a 91. I've completed all 4 of the pre-requisites (Chem, A&P I, English, and Psychology) with A's. To my most recent knowledge, according to Brookhaven's website, they will be accepting 50 students per application period (Spring and Fall). Have anyone else heard of this? And also, does anyone know the minimum overall points of the students accepted into the program? I calculate my HESI score (91-75) for 16 points + 4.0 points for the pre-requisites GPA, and 12 points for the completed support courses, this giving me a total of 32 points. I wonder if this is good enough for acceptance. For those responding to this thread, please feel free to share your status, as we are all in this to achieve the same goal. Also, for past and current nursing students of Brookhaven's nursing program, I welcome your advice and knowledge. Thanks everyone. :)

I noticed the schedule came out, but there are no online classes for patho. That is really disappointing. I'm going to have to bring my HESI score way up now since I won't be able to take patho before I apply.

If it is important to you to have patho done- try Quad C maybe? If you don't live in Collin co. it will cost you a little more, but is worth it. I actually took it through Texas Woman's University to make sure I got it done.I would check with the nursing dept. to make sure it transfers... good luck! And if you do retake the HESI, put together a study packet through Evolve's website, based on the stuff you missed. It's free and invaluable (an oxymoron, right?)

El Centro offers an online patho class. I took it last fall. I'm not sure if they offer it in the summer.

as someone who applied three times and am currently in the first semester, i advise that you have a minimum of a 32. 31.something will be bottom of the barrel. many of your scores will be within hundredths of points from each other, and the bottom line was around 31.75 last time. last year they decided to take 60 in the fall and 40 in the spring- but they may be making it an even 50/50. they want to get more applicants in, but simply don't have the faculty or time. the program is intense as it is! the key to getting in is having a high hesi score, and completion of all but one or two support courses. if you score around 95 on the hesi, you might be able to get away with not having 2 courses. also, if you took the hesi and plan to retake it, login to https://evolve.elsevier.com/ and check your scores. you can create a study packet based on the info you missed- i didn't buy the study book, since the same info was online. this way you are only studying the stuff you need to refresh on- like getting an 80 on the a&p section! i retook my hesi after studying what i originally missed, and made 6 points higher!

look for may term/ summer/ flex term and online classes to enroll in- many are easy to take in a short time (like end of life, dosage, and even patho which can be found online). some people even take courses at other schools outside dcccd and transfer them in. here are the registration dates: when you are ready to register, be ready early! most spots fill up with priority registrants, but some come available later on, so keep the class saved in your schedule in econnect and check for open seats often. they say registration opens at 8am for priority, but it's a fact that people were able to register between 7:30-8am. if you have to go to advising to register, get there at least an hour and a half early!

priority

registration

tue., april 19th thru

sun., april 24th

priority registration starts on econnect at 8 a.m. for eligible students.

regular

registration

mon., april 25 thru

(end dates vary by campus) regular registration is available on econnect during normal hours of operation, 4 a.m.-1 a.m. for eligible students.

good luck! that's my 2 cents :twocents:

how are you able to check what you missed on your hesi, cause when i go back and check on my evolve it just shows the overall grade and not what i missed ?

Does Brookhaven's program accept the RNSG 1311? That is the one that is online and its offered over the summer and May, but I was worried it wouldn't be a substitute since they list the RNSG 1211 for their program.

I cannot confirm, but am pretty optimistic that they will accept it. I read the course descriptions on DCCCD's website, and they are almost the same, verbatim. That's good! Plus, El Centro's RNSG 1311 is actually one credit hour more that BHC's, leading me to believe that it may involve more content. You should definitely call Mrs. A.C. at Brookhaven to confirm, but I would bet money that they will accept it. They require the same pre reqs and co reqs. Good thinking by the way, to take that and substitute it! That's the way! That leaves more room to take other summer classes and get those support courses done! By the way, DCCCD limits the number of credit hours you can take during each summer term, because they don't want any student to overwhelm themselves. From experience, I have gotten them to disregard that for me, so I could take a may term and flex term/summer 1 course at the same time. I don't know that anyone will come into this problem, but know that there may be a solution if you do!

Click on "Reach testing and remediation", then "my exams and remediation" then click the + sign next to your test. It will break the test up into the individual sections and scores, then click on the subject you want to review. On the right side of the page will be options to print detailed results, or Review specialty area results and review materials. Click that one. It may break it down even further... For example, when you first click "Grammar", it may break it up into "vocabulary, general knowledge, etc". It will show you all your scores, so naturally, don't review an area you made 100 in ;) After you click the sub-topic, it will pull up the subject you need to review. For me, when I clicked on the original category "grammar", then "general knowledge", it came up with "osmosis" for me to review. You can read the stuff online, or put it into an electronic study packet to review later. You can also print them out, but what I did was copy and paste the info into Word so I could make the text smaller and into one big document, or grouped however I liked. I also burned that to a CD so I could study wherever without needing the internet.

Hope this helps and isn't too confusing!

Basically, just click the + sign next to your test, and keep clicking the topic you want to review!

By the way- did anyone else notice how the HESI was tricky, and included A&P concepts in the grammar and vocab, and general knowledge?

Brookhaven approved a course sub for me for the ELC Patho . :)

Escapebigd..In regards to the patho class(1311) that is based out of El Centro, Brookhaven does accept this class in exchange for the 1211..I have firsthand knowledge because I had the points for 1311 count towards my Fall 2011 application..Just be sure to get the nursing advisors at BHC to confirm this will be done in the future..It's basically the same course, in fact the one at El Centro is actually a 3 hour course while BHC's is only a 2 hour course..You will want to hurry to enroll with the online course(they fill up)..because like anything with nursing schools the information spreads quickly..This is why the competition is getting so fierce because everyone is learning stategy from those who have already jumped through the hoops of fire..Allnurses.com has been very helpful in my strategic plans..and sweetpea the HESI was very slimy and slick in the wording of their questions..even for those of us who have the best of grammar..

That is great news for me. I have it all lined up and ready to jump when registration becomes available soon. I've bought a english grammar for dummies book, and now I'm just getting ready for the HESI test again.

I noticed that I'm not going to be doing anything except extra courses just for me in the fall, has anyone else noticed their going to have that problem/blessing?

From experience (I am currently first semester), the more support courses you have done prior to starting, the better! I am only doing the 3 nursing courses this semester and it is so intense! For example- Mondays were school 8am-5 pm. Tuesdays 1-4 pm. Wednesdays 9am-2pm. Then we started clinicals, which were on Monday (instead of going to school) for me, but we also spent the day prior preparing for clinical. You have tests, quizzes, and skills to practice/study for.

I cannot imagine taking any other classes! Some of my classmates do, and they manage but it is hard. They don't get much sleep!

Do as much as you can now!

And don't put End of Life off until the end- you may encounter dying patients along the way and may value your training/experience from EOL. Also, you final semester is class 8am-6pm one day a week, clinicals 3 days a week, and studying for your exit HESI and NCLEX.
