Brookhaven Nursing Program - Spring 2012 Admission

Published

Hello everyone, I am searching for fellow nursing applicants who plan to apply for Spring 2012 admission into Brookhaven's nursing program. A little about myself, I am currently completing my support courses (A&P II, Pharmacology, and Microbiology), and for the summer I'll be taking Spanish 1411. I gave the HESI test a try (2/15/11) just to get a feel for it, and I scored a 91. I've completed all 4 of the pre-requisites (Chem, A&P I, English, and Psychology) with A's. To my most recent knowledge, according to Brookhaven's website, they will be accepting 50 students per application period (Spring and Fall). Have anyone else heard of this? And also, does anyone know the minimum overall points of the students accepted into the program? I calculate my HESI score (91-75) for 16 points + 4.0 points for the pre-requisites GPA, and 12 points for the completed support courses, this giving me a total of 32 points. I wonder if this is good enough for acceptance. For those responding to this thread, please feel free to share your status, as we are all in this to achieve the same goal. Also, for past and current nursing students of Brookhaven's nursing program, I welcome your advice and knowledge. Thanks everyone. :)

Thank you Sweatpea1301! Having someone that has been through the program or in it currently is a big help to understand what it will be like.

Death and dying from Collin college transfers too. It fills up fast however if you are a student there and you have more then 50 something credits you can beat the crowd a week early and sign up. Other things I have gathered is get your hepatitis shots done, keep the document proof, and also make sure your turning in all your transcripts after completing classes at other colleges on time. They wont count the class if you don't turn in a transcript to both the school and with your application.

Sweatpea is so awesome! There is more advice written by Sweatpea if you go to the search and type Brookhaven. First few posts has some that is helping those of us who just got accepted for Fall of 2011.

Hey y'all! I'm hoping to get in for Spring 2012 too... I'm taking a buttload of classes over the summer (including Chem :barf02:) to be able to apply so I'm really crossing my fingers that I'm not busting my hump just to have to wait another semester! Good luck to everyone!! :specs:

Yeah I did that in the fall trying to get through all my pre reqs in a hurry. I took AP and Chem together plus 3 other classes in the fall and I will never take that kinda load again. Just stay determined, my GPA didn't suffer for it, but the stress about drove me insane.

Oh yeah I am expecting it to stress me out a LOT but it's very reassuring to hear that your GPA didn't suffer!! A couple of people told me not to do it, and a couple of people told me to do whatever I could to start sooner. There's one weekend during the summer in between my first group of classes (retaking English I, patho, pharm, and dosage) and Chem where I've got nothing - some friends and I are going to float the Guadalupe river that weekend! Even if I don't do anything else this summer it'll be a good one if I can get myself in the program... I'll be doin a lot of this  though!

Make sure you pay attention and retain the information- there will be no review/refresher on those courses once you start the program. It would be more work for you later if you are unable to recall the info from those courses. Everything builds on those basics, so try not to overload. You will be a better student and nurse that way. I took a few classes crammed together like that and feel like I blew through patho and wish I could go back and do it again!

Your GPA should be the least of your worries, honestly. It bearly accounts for anything in the admissions process. I'm not saying to not care at all; I am saying it is more important to take your time to understand the concepts, rather than rush to get started in the program, because often times rushing leads to failure, or unsafe nurses.

If you are a bright student and a good organizer of time, go for it! There are plenty of study materials on the market that will help you along the way, and don't forget to go to evolve's website (your own personal account) and take advantage of their study materials for classes like pharmacology, A/P, and patho.

Definitely! I have been doing my prerequisites as "flex" term classes since I was indecisive about which school I wanted to apply to... Had to do some switching around with my classes :) so the summer classes won't be much more "sped up" than what I'm used to. Sweetpea - since GPA doesn't really count for much, do you think I should even bother retaking English? I got a C in it (I slacked big-time freshman year while getting my Bachelor's!)... do you think it's worth raising my GPA (potentially .5, depends on how I do with Chem) or should I just focus on my other summer classes?

I would really suggest focusing on the other classes. You will get the most points from having your support courses done, and a good HESI score. Retaking English will only take away from you taking another support course, or being able to focus on the ones you will take. Keep in mind that you will have to have a minimum GPA to apply (I forget what it is), but retaking English shouldn't be a priority, especially since you will have your hands full this summer! There will be time to retake it later if you chose- that class is ALWAYS offered in multiple formats throughout the year- you can get a flex term/ speed offering to have it completed in time, if you need :)

To be honest, retaking English was more about raising my GPA than actually brushing up on it (terrible, I know, but the only reason I got a C was my terrible attitude freshman year) so you are probably right!

Also - has anyone tested out of Dosage Calculations? I was planning on taking it this summer but one of the dates turned out to be different than it originally said on eConnect and I won't be in town for it. How do you go about testing out of this class? Anyone that's taken it before, can you give me some tips on what to study? If I can't work out the scheduling, I'll at least try to test out of it... I want that application point!! :D

From experience, I had the same issue last summer with the same class. I was quite panicked and frustrated! Before you make any decisions, speak with the instructor about it. Last summer she allowed us to voluntarily miss the second day if we had done well with the first day's content and did successfully on the first few quizzes and tests, which are taken in your free time, and in class. Is it still Dr. H? She may be willing to work with you, but you may have less of a chance if it is the first day. The content is pretty easy to master and you can purchase any drug calc book to learn it. There are even study materials online. As for testing out, I don't know what the protocol is for that, or if it would count in your points tally. You should definitely email or show up and speak with the instructor.

I was able to get into patho, dosage and AP2 for the summer. I was really worried the classes would fill up before I could get online to register.

It is still Dr. H by the way. Is she good?

That is so good to hear! I was planning on discussing it with her anyway (no harm in trying right?) to see if there is a way to work it out. Is her office in building X? I can't seem to find her contact info on the website but I could drop by during her office hours :)
