Nursing Students General Students

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to get a thread started for all of the BHC/MVC students; please help me get a support system going here. I am starting at BHC in Jan. 07 and would love to make contact with the other new students. It would also be great if the current students would join in too, maybe share some advise;) /horror stories.:uhoh21: I'm sure that you current students have a lot to say.

El Centro/Northlake has a couple of really good threads going, but it would sure be great to talk with those I will be going to school with too.

Good Luck to everyone!

Oh, to answer your other question. This semester is not to bad. We just have lecture one day a week and I have already finished the bulk of my clinicals. Trust me once you get through the first two semesters, it gets a lot less stressful. Of course.... I haven't taken the boards yet

Tomorrow is the BIG DAY!

Good luck to everyone on our 1st day of clinicals, we have made it!:yeah: Let's put on our "nurses caps" and go get um...I mean...go care for um! ha ha.

Thanks to Josh, who has been so supportive of our class! I hope that you have someone just as special ahead of you to look to.

Well my friends...sleep good tonight!

Toni

thanks Toni!!

congratulations to all of us! Today was quite possibly one of the coolest days of my life. I am even more certain after today, that I am in the right place at the right time on my life.

And yes, Toni, I agree. Huge kuddos to sweet ol' Josh. It's so nice having you in our corner.

Hello everyone. I can not believe our first week is over. I am so tired but have loved every second of my time at the hospital. The patient that I took care of today has a DNR I hope that he is still there when we go back next Tuesday. I feel like in the past three days that I have learned so much, and have seen several really neat things. Hope that everyone had a wonderful week. And we all need to get some rest for next week.

Congrats on finishing your first week of clinicals! I remember when i started how excited I was to actually get in there and practice everything that I had learned. I still remember how shaky my hands were when I opened the med package with Mrs. Routh standing there. She asked me why my hands were shaking and I sheepishley said "Ummm I guess I had to much coffee today". I didn't want to tell her that I was really shaking because she was making me nervous as heck! Trust me guys, once you really start getting up there in the program you will look back and realize how cool your first clinicals are. Now, rest and don't stress about those major care plans!:angryfire

talk about tired! it was so nice to sleep in today...all of 8:30, but it felt great!

i am so glad that the first week of clinicals is over. i think that i will have so much more confidence walking back in next week, the nurses will be more familar with us and will probably be more apt to allow us to do things and become more involved in their cases.

i am off now to dive back into my major care plan. it looms over my head like a big meteorite.

josh, i know that you said not to sweat it, but my last two "learning" care plan/patho statements this past week were picked over with a fine tooth comb and i was told i need to dig deeper. i'm not complaining about the whole "comb" thing as it will only make me stronger; i just want to do a good job and make ms. routh proud. btw, what are you doing right now? are you in clinicals too or on break?

have a great weekend my friends.

Mrs. Routh always say to "dig deeper". I think it is one of her favorite things to say! Of course, you should really try to go deeper if she asks you too! I just have class one day a week on Mondays. I only have one more clinical day (it's an easy one because I am actually at a pedi clinic) and then we get a two week break. After that, it is on to fourth and Final semester! Yes, I can't wait! Keep working hard :typing

Hey Guys and Gals! I need your help! I know I have posted to this forum a few times, but I need some direction more than ever. The last week I have been in tears every day trying to figure out how in the heck I'm going to do this. After talking to the advisors at Brookhaven, it looks like I will be applying in the Spring to start nursing (assuming I get accepted) in the Summermester. I will have ALL of more prereqs and core classes completed by that time.

Here is my dilema! How in the *&^%$ am I going to do this? I have never worked in the medical field and am an account manager for a direct mail marketing company. I've been here for 6 years. I'm trying to figure out if I can work while in nursing school. With you all attending the Brookhaven program I figured you would know better than anybody. Is it possible to work a part time job? Should I work as a student nurse and if so, does anybody know how much you can make while doing that? I plan on getting student loans as I will probably only have about 2 months worth of pay saved up by the time I start to cover my apartment and expenses. I have never been so scared in my entire life, as things have always been so stable with me and now I feel like I'm standing on the end of a needle about to fall at any second. I want to become a nurse more than anything, but I can't live on the streets while doing so! Help, please!! I would love to talk to somebody offline if anybody has any suggestions.

Hi,

I don't know much about Brookhaven's program, I am at El Centro, but I know that many students in my class are working while in nursing school. I personally chose not to work because I also have a family to take care of, and I just do better with less stress, I am to old :lol2: .

I would hang on to your job at first, because if you don't have a CNA certificate you will have a hard time to get a nurse tech position until after first semester. And it might not pay as much. If you're dependent on the pay, you might be better of to stick with your job for now. Don't be scared , you seemed determined , you will make it.

Also, if your federal student loans don't cover enough, and you should need some extra to cover some living expenses, there is the option to get some private school loans. Talk to your bank, I believe you also don't have to pay these back until after you finished school.

Jo-Jo

trust me I was as scared as you are when I first started. They will tell you right off the bat that it is impossible to work fulltime and be in nursing school. This is a load of hogwash. I have been working full time (36 hours per week, 12hour shifts) ever since I have been in nursing school. I have also maintained a 3.8 GPA. My mom, while in Nurse Practitioner school, also worked full time and raised four kids. She ended up getting the highest score in the country on her NP exam the year she graduated! If we can do it, anyone can! Do I have much of a life? No. But, it is only temporary. As far as a nurse tech job, they are great becuase you can be full time working only three days a week. I work as one @ Baylor and the starting pay is around 11/hr starting out. As you advance through the program they give you raises (13/hr at the start of fourth semester). I guess what I am trying to say is, don't freak out about it. You know what you are capable of! If you have any questions let me know.

Josh

Josh and Mysterious One,

Thank you so much! I'm working with my company now to determine if I can stay part-time (as they are an 8-5 M-F kind of company) to at least supplement my income. I think I can get the pay I need to at least stock pile in the bank if they agree to these terms. I guess as a last resort I can be a 35 year old waitress again! :-) Anything to bring in the cash. If I can do that through my first semester until I can get my CNA (I don't even know how to get that yet) then maybe I can do that for the last 3 semesters!!

Did either of you sign a contract with a hospital to get them to pay for your schooling or are you completely on your own with that? I heard that this was an option.

Yeah, most of the hospitals in the area will do a tuition payback thing. The way Baylor does it is they pay my tuition only 100 percent. They do not require a contract as I am full time. If you work part time as a nurse tech they do require a contract. I wouldn't worry about getting a CNA cert. Most of the area hospitals only require that you have completed a semester of clinicals.
