Hey guys! We (1st semester) start clinicals this week...a few of us are hoping to get a head start on patho statements. I was wondering if you had any ideas on some definite diseases we would be seeing (telemetry and med surg floors.) Any help would be appreciated :)

This is by no means an exhaustive list but plan on seeing the following:

CHF (congestive Heart failure)

Cad (coronary artery disease)

Diabetes, Pancreatitis, COPD, Pneumonia, C-diff, Colitis, Diverticulitis, Bowel Obstructions, Peripheral Arterial disease, MRSA, sepsis, dehydration, SIADH, hyponatremia, Valvular heart disease, post op colectomies, CABG patients, heart cath post op, pacemakers, hip replacements, knee replacements, amputations, chest pain/fresh MI, and any other number of exciting cases! What hospitals are you all at?

Hello everyone! I am currently attending BHC and hope to be able to apply to the Nursing Program in Fall of 09'. I am looking for advice to make sure that when I apply I will be accepted. What does it take as far as pre reqs are concerned? Should I volunteer at a hospital also? Should I take as many classes as possible or should I just stick to the pre reqs that's required?

Hey! I am currently in the program and about to finish my 1st semester. I would definitely complete as many (if not all) of the support classes (patho, end of life, micro, etc) before starting the program. Can you take those classes and be in the program-yes, but I feel so sorry for my classmates that are currently in that position. You have enough to worry about once you get in the program and it would be to your benefit to get those out of the way prior to starting the program. I would also say that with the exception of a few, most of the students are not working-so be prepared for that. I know a few have to, but it's really hard-especially if you're married, have a child, etc. The pre-reqs are english, chem, psych and a &p 1...and the entrance hesi. Go to one of the information sessions...they are really helpful. As far as volunteering goes, if you can work in a hospital before it would be helpful so that everything isn't so foreign. I had never worked in a hospital prior to starting clinicals this semester and it was kinda a culture shock But, it isn't a necessity...if I can make it-anyone can! Any other questions?

Take your pre reqs and make the best possible grade that you can in those classes. Then take as many of the support classes that you can the sciences first because they are worth 2 points apiece and I would not want to take them along with the nursing classes. I had all of my support classes done with the exception of End Of life issues. I am in my third semester I am so glad that I decided to go back to school for nursing. If you have never been in a hospital before it might help to at least volunteer to see what it is like. I am single and do not work ( with three kids one in college) It is very hard to work during nursing school although many do. The ones that do work have jobs at the hospitals. Good luck with every thing.

Can anyone recommend any good teachers at BHC? How do you find a study buddy? Did you work while taking the pre reqs? What did you guys use to study for the HESI?

I have been looking for you Brookhaven people everywhere. I applied this semester, and emails go out between Thursday, and Monday. I am so excited, and feel pretty good about my points. This is my second application, and I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I would love to know what the program is like. What you like, and dislike about it. What has tripped you up, what to watch out for, any advice at all.

I am so nervous, excited, and scared all at the same time. I have wanted this for so long, and I know I will be soooo happy when/if I get an acceptance email for about 30 seconds, and then the fear will set in. It will hit me that I am actually going to nursing school, and I have no idea what it will be like. Fill me in with all the grisly details.

How many points did you have to be accepted into the program? I know it varies with each semester but I would like an idea.

The program is CRAZY! When they say that you will devote every spare minute to it...believe it! I am having a great time, though. It's hard, but you already knew that I would just say to plan on spending more money than you think, studying harder for a B and sometimes being thankful that you just passed (heehee!), meeting great people, doubting yourself then 5 minutes later praising yourself, getting used to other people's poop and genitals and having fun. I don't know what I could have done to prepare myself better (maybe took better notes in patho!), but I'm here now and doing well. Best of luck to you! And enjoy your free time now, because school will be your life.

I had 32. not sure what the lowest points was, but we have 3 or 4 ppl in my class that were originally alternates....some people accepted and then a week or 2 into the program quit so they were in.
